Journalist Killed One journalist killed, four hurt |

A freelance photojournalist was among the 28 killed in Saturday’s suicide attack on Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao in Charsadda, while another photojournalist, ATV cameraman and two reporters were wounded, Daily Times learnt on Monday. Free-lance photojournalist Mehboob Khan, 22, died at the scene, Charsadda-based local journalist Faiz Muhammad told Daily Times. ATV cameraman Arif Yousafzai, reporter Siddiqullah of Peshawar-based Urdu daily Subah newspaper, reporter Ayaz Muhammad of the APP and photographer Arshad Ali of the PID are being treated for wounds. They are all stated to be in stable condition although Ali is still hospitalized for burn injuries.

Government Regulations Notice to Mobile Company for TV on mobile |
| |
TV broadcast can’t be provided through mobile phones, since there is no legislation for TV transmission on mobile sets. Pemra has authority to license for TV transmission. Since TV on mobile is new class, it will be licensed separately. Consultation among different stakeholders is in progress to from strategy to grant license. According to APP, PEMRA and PTA has served notice to mobile company for initiating TV transmission on mobile set without any prior approval. Pemra Chief has told that enforcement section of Pemra has been asked to initiate proper action.

PEMRA against passing on excise duty to cable users |
| |
The Pakistan Media Regulator Authority has told the cable operators to continue paying the Federal Excise Duty (FED) as burden could not be passed to the consumers at least this year. The cable operators have refused to pay the monthly duty of Rs25 per consumer and asked Pemra to work out a plan with central board of revenue (CBR) to charge it directly from users. In a press conference, Cable Operators Association Chairman Khalid Sheikh said Pemra wanted the cable operators to keep on paying the excise till the next financial year. Cable operators want exempt from excise tax.

PEMRA asked not to ban broadcast without written notice |
| |
Parliamentary Secretary Cabinet division Dr.Fardous Ashiq Awan has asked Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority not to ban broadcasting of any channel without written notice. It should be strictly followed. Members of parliament have complained to her that transmission of 'TV Today' was blocked without any prior notice. Dr.Fardous Ashiq Awan told that PM had issued a directive to enforcement division of PEMRA to extend cordial behavior with channels. PEMRA has been asked to uplift ban and serve written notice before any action.

Mosque Media Ghazi claims Lal Masjid website again banned, ‘act against freedom of expression’ |

Government has again blocked the official website of Jamia Hafza and Lal Masjid. It is claimed by Abdur Rasheed Ghazi head of Lal Masjid. Sometimes ago, website was blocked by PTA on directions of Government of Pakistan. Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa designed website to project their activities. Later, Lal Masjid again launched the website from new domain www.lalmasjid.com . Abdur Rasheed Ghazi has termed the action against the freedom of expressions. Government is using immoral tactics to curb freedom of expression.

Media Miscellaneous PIA spent Rs 157m on purchase of newspapers |

Defence Minister Rao Sikandar Iqbal told the National Assembly on Monday the Pakistan International Airlines spent Rs 157 million on purchase of newspapers and magazines during the last three years. Rs 42 million were paid in 2004, Rs 45 million in 2005 and the amount jumped to Rs 70 million in 2006, the minister said in a written reply to a question by PPPP MNA Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur. hirty national and regional newspapers -- English and Urdu -- were purchased by the national flag carrier for its entire network in 2004, 33 dailies in 2005 and 34 in 2006, he said, adding that seven local and international magazines were bought in 2004, 20 in 2005 and 19 in 2006.

Books 21st volume of Lughat published |
| |
The Urdu Lughat Board has published the 21st volume of Urdu Lughat. The last volume came out in July 2005. The president of the Urdu Lughat Board, Dr Farman Fatehpuri, said that the 21st volume consisted of 824 pages and contained thousands of words, idioms, phrases and proverbs. He added that the first and last words of the volume were “Waw” and “Hazarha”, respectively. The Urdu Lughat Board plans to publish 22 volumes containing 300,000 words, give or take a few hundred words.

Music Pathanay Khan’s relics up for auction |

Iqbal Pathanay Khan, son of famous Saraiki folk musician Pathanay Khan, said that he will auction his father’s tabla, harmonium, a crutch and 79 awards in front of the PTV’s Lahore office on Aug 14 this year. Iqbal, himself a professional folk singer, told Dawn that despite publication of a report regarding the financial woes of the maestro’s family, so far no government department had contacted him to extend any help. Only a Senator, Amjad Qureshi, sent a fax asking him to send him his bio-data, he said. “A Seraiki TV channel offered me a job, but they did not contact me again,” he added.

Advertisement Bill against women models in ads planned |

Women MPAs belonging to the Jamaat-i-Islami will soon introduce a bill in the NWFP Assembly to declare the use of women models for promotion of products in advertisements a crime. The party’s MPAs have already submitted a bill seeking ban on publication of pictures of women victims of violence and another one to curb discrimination against women who use veil. Women parliamentarians of the party said at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club on Monday that the bills were aimed at ending discrimination against women. Senator Dr Kauser Ferdos, MNA Raheela Qazi, MNA Aisha Manwar, MNA Inayat Begum, MNA Razia Aziz and MPAs Zubaida Khatoon, Shagufta Naz, Fozia Farakh, Sabira Shakir and Aftab Shabir also briefed the press about the performance of the women parliamentarians of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal.“Another bill will be introduced in the provincial assembly to ensure maternity leave for women working in private firms,” they said.

CDWP clears installation of satellite stations |
| |
Asif Shaikh, spokesman for the Planning Commission, told mediapersons that the CDWP okayed 69 projects with a total cost of Rs 96.9 billion, including a foreign exchange component of Rs 27.2 billion. Asked if the provinces sought sharing of funding by the federal government for the education sector reforms programme, he said Ecnec would decide the funding modalities of this most important project. He said it was the 10th meeting of the CDWP and in the earlier nine meetings the CDWP had approved 283 projects worth Rs 306 billion. The meeting also cleared the most sensitive project about installation of satellite stations in various parts of the country.

Internet Ericsson denies ‘free laptop’ offer |

Technology giant Ericsson has denied that it is distributing free computer laptops as a widely circulated spam email is claiming. “The Ericsson Company is distributing free computer laptops in an attempt to match Nokia that has already done so,” the email claims. “All you need to qualify is to send this mail to eight people you know... Make sure to send a copy to: .” When Daily Times contacted Ericsson’s head office in Sweden, it clarified Monday that the chain letter is a fraud which has not been initiated by the company. Furthermore, the letter is signed by an “Anna Swelund, Executive Promotion Manager for Ericsson Marketing” who does not exist at Ericsson. The company’s office in Islamabad also said that no such offer had been initiated in Pakistan.
