Attack on Media Ban Pemra stops FM station from broadcasting BBC content |
| |
A local FM radio has stopped hourly news bulletins syndicated by the BBC Pakistan after the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) ordered its management to immediately stop the broadcast of “all sorts of BBC content/programmes”. Pemra in a letter to the FM 103 management said: “You are hereby directed to immediately stop the broadcast of all sorts of BBC content/programmes failing which Pemra shall be constrained to take appropriate legal action against you.” The letter issued on Friday asked the FM radio management that they were specifically informed through a letter on June 21 that their application was still in process and a decision was yet to be taken on it. Therefore, the management should not start the broadcast of BBC programmes until a formal decision was communicated to the radio by Pemra.

Media Workshop Journalists encounter top military brass in workshop |
| |
Most participants of the week-long ‘National Media Workshop’ praised its National Defence University organisers for giving journalists a chance to confront key people from the military hierarchy, including the chief of the army staff. The participants had no complaints about the arrangements, except that the workshop used to start at 9:00am, forcing journalists to wake up early in the morning, which is something they view as unbearable due to the nature of their work timings. The aim of the workshop was to sensitise journalists about issues of national security and national interests in the changing global perspective and the responsibilities of an expanding media. All the four provinces were given representation in the workshop, participants of which included women as well. Hasan Khan, the Pushto-language Khyber TV’s anchorperson, appreciated the organisers of the workshop that, he said, had “helped me understand the army, their mindsets about vital national security and national interests”. “What really surprised me was the candid and open discussion with the senior military leadership,” he told Daily Times.
