Media Regulation 11 foreign channels get Pemra approval |
| |
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Tuesday granted licences to three more TV channels Waseb, TV One and Rung TV, a mobile TV licence to Mobilink and landing rights to 11 foreign channels. The authority also approved 297 fresh cable TV licences which were being run illegally.
Briefing journalists after the authority’s meeting, Pemra chairman Iftikhar Rasheed said the decisions had been taken to ensure the principles of fairplay and competition among electronic media players. The authority examined the current status of electronic media in the country and resolved to maintain a level playing field for all media operations. With the grant of three more TV licences, the number of private TV channels in the country has increased to 26. Pemra had earlier issued a mobile TV permission to Telenor. The Pemra chairman said steps were being taken to regulate the private broadcasting sector. He said that efforts to regularise illegal and unlicenced operations would continue till the introduction of true regulatory framework in the county. He said that the authority had also decided to finalise a precise programme content code for FM radios. He said that the authority had decided not to permit any FM station to air foreign programme or content in deviation of its prime objective of providing local community-based programmes. |

Petition seeking ban on ‘Khuda Kay Liye’ |
| |
The Sindh High Court (SHC), on Tuesday asked the counsel of the religious scholar who sought injunction against the exhibition of the film ‘Khuda Kay Liye’ to produce the text of the Qura’an and Hadith that prohibits music and pictures in Islam. The court was hearing the petition of Saifullah Rabbani, a spokesman of Jamia Binoria Al-Alimi, SITE, who claimed that the film contained controversial scenes and the real face of Islam has been distorted in the story of the film. The petitioner’s counsel Maqboolur Rehman said that the controversial movie has defamed the teachings of Islam and was promoting music and western culture. He alleged the film producer and director tried to create hatred against Islam and Jihad, which was having a negative impact on the minds of Muslims as well as people of other religions. He claimed that the film had been banned in India and Europe but surprisingly it was being screened in Pakistan by the cinema owners. He said that Chairman Censor Board, who is the supervisory authority, has not banned the movie nor deleted the controversial scenes from it, which could create sectarian and religious hatred amongst the different sects of Muslims. It was submitted that film artistes being Muslim used dialogues that were derogatory and insulting to religious feelings and emotions. |
