  A two week training for radio journals on election reporting concluded at Peshawar University Broadcast Academy. “Media has responsibility to provide a forum for public debate during polls.” said Adnan Rehmat country director of Internews Network that organized the training.

Durrani seeks CPNE role as think-tank
  Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani Saturday said that the government regards the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) as a national asset and this institution should work as a think-tank to provide guidelines to the nation on national and international issues. “The government, under the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, not only helped the strengthening, development, independence and integrity of the media but also acknowledged its significance as the fourth pillar of the state. We will continue the welfare and development of professional skills of the working journalists,” he said while chairing a meeting with a CPNE delegation here at his office. The CPNE delegation comprised President CPNE Fasih Iqbal, Zahid Malik, Khushnood Ali Khan, Mehtab Khan Abbasi, Abdul Wadood Qureshi, Ghulam Akbar, Sheikh Iftikhar Adil, Sardar Khan Niazi and Khalil-ur-Rehman. Additional Secretary Information and Broadcasting Fazal-ur-Rehman Malik, Director General Internal Publicity Wing Syed Fayyaz Shah and PIO Rashid Chaudhry were also present.

  Durrani asks media to expose wrongdoings, corruption at all levels
  Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani on Thursday said that the media should expose the wrongdoings, misconduct and corruption at all levels by conducting indiscriminate and impartial reporting in the best national and public interest. “In the present era of competition, the public and private media should rise to the challenge and expose all sorts of wrongdoings, violations and corruption whether in public or private sector. You should differentiate between the truth and falsehood, exposing all the black sheep in the best public and state interest,” said the Information Minister while inaugurating the first-ever National Conference of APP District Correspondents. Federal Secretary Information Syed Anwar Mahmood, Managing Director (MD) APP Rai Riaz Hussain and other senior officials of APP were also present.

Congress opposes closure of PTV pushto transmission
  Almi Pushto congress demanded on Friday the government withdraw its decision to close pushto transmission from PTV Peshawar centre. They asked government to launch Abasian TV. According to PTV decision, federal government has closed Pushto language broadcasts from PTV Peshawar centre from august 1 and shifted them to PTV National Karachi that can be seen only via cable network. Congress also suggested NWFP papers should contain pushto pages.

Book fair from today
  A nine-day book fair opens at Paramount Books’ showroom on Saturday (today). The fair, which has been organised for the past 19 years, will remain open (including Sundays and holidays) from 10am to 9pm. The showroom is located at 152/O, Block 2, PECHS, Sufi Street off Sir Syed Road.

  Students unable to get books from Urdu bazaar
  With the start of the new academic session, students thronged to the Urdu bazaar, the main supplier of academic books for the entire city. However, this year students were in for a shock because they were unable to get their desired books and many had to endure the stagnant water accumulated in the entire area after the recent rains. Although a week has passed since the rains, the water in the area has not been drained. Further more, a pile of garbage next to a government college in the area continues to grow. Neither the shopkeepers nor the town administration pay attention to cleaning the area where students aged five and above come to purchase their course books.
