  Media still not independent: seminar
It is true Pakistan is more democratic than the past. It is also true the media is quite free to comment on the performance of the government. However, the focus of these claims is on the ritualistic and formal aspects of democracy; there is hardly any attempt to deepen and enrich it. Consequently, the freedoms enjoyed by the media and the societal groups are far below the critical mass leading to genuinely participatory, accountable and transparent governance,” said the speakers in a seminar on the topic “Mass Communication and Modern Techniques” held by the Department of Mass Communication Hamdard University Islamabad.

Martial law and the dictatorial ways of successive governments have over the years taken away the true spirit of democracy — the people’s right to rule through their representatives.
