Press under siege | Pressures on media men
The media and press freedom in Pakistan, which President Musharraf keeps bragging about, is under tremendous pressure and threats. Pakistan has lost four valuable journalists in 2006. They have proved to be an asset at a time when raising their voice of truth demands unflinching courage and readiness to die for it. This year has started with another setback when Sohail Qalandar, resident editor of the Daily Express, was kidnapped from Peshawar. Last year, Hayatullah’s kidnapping and later murder, has already set a bad precedent. The kidnapping of Qalandar from the same province once again refreshed memories of Hayatullah — an eminent figure in the journalists’ community.
