"Mr. (Nicholas) Kristof's assertion that Pakistanis 'seem increasingly fed up with the president's lies and thuggery' is highly inappropriate," Nadeen Haider Kiani, the embassy press attache said of the columist. “There should be an element of respect for a person who is respected by millions of people around the world," he said in a letter published in the Times Saturday. Of late, the freedom of press and media has been in focus a lot more than before. And it was heartening to know that no longer are we being kept in darkness regarding the policies and circumstances of our country. The voice of the masses is being heard and our opinions and issues were being given much better exposure than before. This is thanks to the increase in the number of channels now available and their enthusiasm for trying to capture the attention of the viewership.

Cinema owners split over strike call |
| |
Office bearers of the Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association (PFEA) are split over the issue of the strike called by the association for the acceptance of their demands. PFEA had announced token strikes on every Thursday from March 15 for three weeks and a weeklong strike from April 5 to 12. The cinema owners have been demanding permission for screening of Indian movies to give a much-needed boost to their businesses. During his recent visit to Lahore, Federal Minister for Culture GG Jamal while talking to reporters had categorically rejected the idea of screening of Indian movies. "It is not as easy as we might think. We will have to consult the Foreign Office," he said.

National Art gallery row: By Amra Ali (Karachi) |
| |
The opening of the National Gallery of Art in Islamabad this month has been postponed due to the abrupt interference of a small group of bureaucrats who are trying to jeopardise the original project of the gallery. That Pakistan still does not have a home for the collection of its masters or exhibitions that trace its contemporary directions in art, after more than fifty years, reflects our collective lack of pride in our artistic achievements. However, with the promise of a national gallery whose impressive structure was to open the doors to a new future for the nurturing of our art, the visual arts community is stunned to have received news that the original purpose of the gallery will now be taken over by the performing arts.

Stupid ads: Special Report by Omar R. Qureshi |
| |
For the longest time -- at least for the last decade or so -- one has often heard that Pakistani advertisements were not very good. This point especially hit home when the Star channels became available on the satellite dish (this would be the early to mid 1990s) and viewers in Pakistan were able to watch adverts made in India.

Thanks to computers, mobile phones and internet, gambling today is a more high-tech, less manual affair
"Betting patterns and methods have gone through a massive reshuffle due to technology advent in our part of the world in the last ten years," a bookie told TNS.
He pointed out the different modern gadgets in his room and said with a smile: "They have made my life very easy. Just 10 years ago I had to go to Karachi to bet on horse races that would cost a lot in the form of air fares and other living expenses. But now, sitting here in my room, I can bet on Derby races of South Africa, UK, Hong Kong and Dubai or any other game playing in any part of the world."

This art or that: By Sarah Sikander |
| |
National Art Gallery is the fruit of endeavours of precursors of art in Pakistan and now everyone wants to have a piece of it. Just how true is the claim?
Nothing comes without a price, they say, and the price that the artists and the people of Pakistan have paid for National Art Gallery is anticipation of 29 long years. However, instead of exultation at the imminent opening of first National Art Gallery of the country, there is discontentment and dejection.
