“The APNS award in the category of the Best Investigative Report goes to Mr. Amir Mir of Monthly Herald. But the award cannot be given to him right now and the president of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) would honour Amir Mir once the award distribution ceremony is over,” declared the senior vice president of the APNS who was conducting the annual award distribution ceremony in Islamabad on May 26, 2006. In the audience was present the chief guest of the function — General Pervez Musharraf, in his capacity as the President of Pakistan.

IB harassment of newspapermen
Pakistan and India have been engaged in a peace process since January 2004; top officials on the two sides meet regularly and promise to enhance people-to-people contact; they are talking about trade and other exchanges and so on. But none of this activity seems to have reached the attention of the Intelligence Bureau, whose low level personnel continue to slither and slide in the old grooves and behave as if they are the last bastion of defence against the Indian “enemy”.

Who killed Munir Sangi?
INTERNATIONAL media watchdog organisations are correct in asking the Pakistan government to investigate the death of a TV cameraman, Munir Sangi, who was shot dead on Monday while covering clashes in Larkana. There are some who suspect that Mr Sangi may have been targeted for his TV channel's reporting on a jirga's decision.

Rs 300,000 compensation for Sangi's family; protest rallies held across interior Sindh
The Sindh Home Department on Thursday appointed the District and Sessions Judge Larkana Anwar Alam Baloch as inquiry officer to probe into the killing of photojournalist Munir Sangi, while performing his professional duties last week, and fix responsibility in this regard.

Murder of TV cameraman termed target killing
Terming the murder of TV cameraman Munir Sangi a ‘target killing', journalist union leaders have accused a Sindh provincial minister of having plotted the murder. The cameraman of a private channel was gunned down when he was covering a tribal clash in Larkana early this week.

Sangi's killing widely condemned
Protest rallies were held on Thursday in several districts of the interior of Sindh against the murder of TV cameraman Munir Sangi. In Hyderabad , a large number people, including journalists, politicians and leaders of social welfare organisations took out a procession from the Sindh University old campus to Hyder Chowk. They also staged a sit-in in the chowk blocking traffic.

Responsible reporting of sensitive issues stressed
Media persons need to responsibly and sensibly report sensitive issues such as gender-based violence, hounour killings and reproductive health. The sensitisation of media personnel to such sensitive issues is necessary so that they could report them professionally and an effective manner, which will be an important step towards solving them, said speakers at a one-day orientation workshop for media professionals of the province here on Thursday.

Press under siege: Another martyr of press freedom
Our “right to know” is dependent on the “freedom of expression” of those who are the guardians of imparting information to us through words and pictures in newspapers and on television and the internet. Unless their right to know is secure, the citizens' need to know would be difficult to fulfil. Any appreciation in the form of awards does not share the pain they suffer covering conflicts, wars, and disputes.
