Three journalists detained overnight; several others threatened; newspaper threatened with arson

Attack on Peshawar Press Club and threats against journalists in Pakistan

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has denounced further violence against journalists in Pakistan after a recent attack on the Peshawar Press Club by activists of the Pakistan Muslim League, injuring newsmen and staff members of the club.

CM unveils housing colony for journalists

Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has announced a number of uplift projects for Rawalpindi , including expansion of roads, construction of flyovers, reopening of a polytechnic institute and construction of a housing colony for the members of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club (RIPC). Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected body of the press club on Sunday the chief minister announced that the foundation stone laying ceremony of the journalists housing colony would be held by the end of this month.

Press Club Attack: Body to review meeting with ministers' committee today

The general body meeting of the Peshawar Press Club is scheduled today, Monday, wherein journalists would review the meeting with the two-member federal ministers committee, constituted by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, and also decide future line of action in the wake of row between press club and ruling PML-Q.

Attack on press club condemned

Leaders of different parties, speaking at a protest meeting held by journalists here on Sunday, condemned the recent attack on the Peshawar Press Club and demanded the arrest of attackers. They joined a protest demonstration held by journalists outside the Kohat Press Club and wore black armbands.

Government supporting regional press

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government has taken steps for welfare of journalists in the province, including the setting up of a Sarhad Journalists Foundation and an endowment for them. Addressing the first anniversary meeting of a local Urdu daily on Saturday, provincial Information and Broadcasting Minister Asif Iqbal Daudzai said the MMA government had started providing financial support to district and tehsil-level press clubs. Mr Daudzai said the government had tried to ensure freedom of the press, adding that it always welcomed objective criticism.

Date extended for nominations for the first annual Aslam Ali Press Freedom Award

The Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) has extended the date until July 15, 2006 for reciept nominations for the first annual Aslam Ali Press Freedom Award. The award, instituted by PPF with support of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), carries a cash award of one hundred thousand rupees (Rs. 100,000).
