Harassing journalists
The reports of beating of a journalist, Mian Mohammad Hussain in Mansehra by three persons and the inability of the local police to apprehend the people against whom the said journalist had reported, speaks of the kind of freedom of the press that newspaper and TV journalists enjoy in this country; that journalists can speak their minds if they have the courage to bear the beating and even be murdered by those whose vested interests are harmed by the exposure of truth.

Attacks on media on the rise, says Intermedia report
Attacks on the media in Pakistan have increased considerably over the last six months. Ten attacks on the media were reported in July by a non-government media development organisation in its monthly report on ‘The state of media in Pakistan '. Islamabad-based Intermedia said that eight journalists were “harassed and tortured” in those 10 attacks on the media. “The statistics show that June (13 incidents), March (11 incidents) and July were the most difficult months for the media this year.”

Special PTV transmission on Independence Day
Pakistan Television (PTV) will air ‘Mera Pakistan ', a special telecast for Independence Day celebrations in August, said PTV Managing Director (MD) Ashraf Azeem in a press conference on Wednesday.

Journalists allowed after PIA chairman's intervention
The PIA officials Wednesday held a ceremony at the Multan Airport to identify the belongings of the plane crash victims by their relatives. The PIA authorities have received the articles from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) officials. The articles included half-burnt currency notes worth Rs 350,000, 11 cell phones, half-burnt dresses, 10 tolas of gold ornaments, 34 pairs of burnt shoes, documents, four passports, watches etc.

‘Obscene' film CDs set on fire
The city police set on fire hundreds of ‘obscene' film CDs and posters at Chowk Yaadgaar on Wednesday evening. Police torched CDs of Pashto, Punjabi, Urdu, Indian and English films, stage dramas and songs and posters of film actresses, and even some cricketers.

Legitimate airwaves in FATA

Information dissemination is an integral part of development. Conventional methods used for creating awareness among the masses were newspapers, pamphlets, handouts and folk media, while radio, television and video are used to disseminate information on mass scale. While these do allow the dissemination of information, several factors such as poverty, illiteracy, socio-cultural differences, and geographical distances often act as barriers.

In the fast era of modern technology, almost everyone watches television to keep up to date, or the TV serves as a mode of recreation for leisure time. Whenever a foreigner is interviewed, they talk in their own language, and for better comprehension of the discussions, TV channels run Urdu translations on the screen.
