Media in Courts SHC adjourns petition against PEMRA till today |
| |
The hearing in two identical miscellaneous applications against PEMRA (the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) filed by Trade Serve International and BBC Pakistan was adjourned till Friday by Justice Muhammad Moosa K. Leghari of the Sindh High Court (SHC) after hearing the counsel for petitioners. The applicants have challenged the ban on airing news produced by BBC-P on FM100. Earlier, the bench had perused a rejoinder filed by the applicant in response to a counter affidavit by respondent PEMRA. The applicants maintained that the impugned order and counter affidavit by the respondent made no mention of the alleged violations on the part of the applicants or objections to their conduct. The impugned order for prohibiting the broadcast was a facade, the real purpose being to censor news content shedding light on government policies, the applicants maintained. They further maintained that the agreement between FM100 and BBC-P was valid and according to its license, FM100 was free to air programs by BBC-P or even a foreign radio channel as long as the contents did not violate PEMRA laws. The PEMRA Ordinance does not mandate that all contracts by a licensee be approved by the respondents, they maintained. The owners of FM100 maintained that they are not sponsoring news but are providing news programs. The phrase “local area community based” refers to eographical limits of radio frequency and not the contents of programs. It is absurd to suggest that residents of a certain city are only entitled to hear news pertaining to that city, they maintained. On Thursday, during the course of arguments, the petitioners claimed discrimination maintaining that besides GEO TV network airing VOA, a number of other foreign news channels including CNN, Sky News and Fox are being aired. The counsel for the applicants was at his feet when the bench put off the hearing till 10 a.m. Friday.

Telecommunication Check illegal sale of SIMs: PTA warns cellphone cos |
| |
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Thursday cautioned mobile companies to check unauthorized sales of new SIMs and warned that franchises selling undocumented connections would be sealed. The word of warning came after Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary took suo motu action on complaints that new cellular connections of different mobile phone companies are being sold at every nook and corner of the city without any identity card and verification. The action followed complaints suggesting that unregistered phone numbers issued on false names were being used in crimes such as kidnapping for ransom, murder, robbery, obnoxious calls to users even important social and political personalities and many other social crimes. Deputy Director Khurram Ali Mehran told Dawn that the concerned companies would be asked to cancel those franchises which were not complying with PTA instructions.
