Telephony, TV and Internet on single line
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on Thursday awarded the first Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) licence to the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). Only four out of 49 countries of the Asia Pacific region have launched this technology so far. PEMRA Chairman Iftikhar Rashid said the IPTV was the most modern technology being adopted in developed countries, enabling users/subscribers to enjoy a triple-through-one mode using an IP network.Television, Internet and Telephony can now be availed on a single line, he said.

Government orders probe into journalist murder
The interior secretary has said the Islamabad Police, FIA and intelligence agencies have been ordered to probe into murder of senior journalist, Muhammad Ismail, who was found dead Wednesday. A delegation of senior journalists of Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club met Interior Secretary Kamal Shah and asked about the progress made in the murder case. Islamabad IG Iftikhar Chaudhry, SSP Sikandar Hayat, SP Investigation Ashfaq Khan and ASP Adil were also attended the meeting.

PM against wazir nama at PTV
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has expressed displeasure over turning the new bulletin of PTV into the "wazir namas" and directed the administration to give more coverage to religious and sports programmes instead of concentrating on music related programmes. He urged the administration to highlight the problems of common man and as to what the government is doing for them instead of making the bulletins "wazir nama". Aziz also stressed the management to attract celebrated journalists for holding programs on current affairs. The PM also criticised the outdated news that the PTV presents to its readers and said "for God's sake please change the person who makes tickers to circulate news that are 24-hour old".

PM tells PTV to attract more viewers       Â
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has asked the Pakistan Television (PTV) to present good quality programmes about religion, news, sports and entertainment to enhance its viewership and carve a niche in the competitive market. Addressing the conference of PTV general managers at Prime Ministers House, he asked the state television network to strive for excellence and to project Pakistan positively across the globe.

Internet security has become national security concern: moot
Chief of Military Information Technology (IT) Operations Lt Gen Malik Arif Hayat Thursday said that in this era of information explosion the Internet security had become a matter of national security. He said common people, businesses as well as defence were becoming increasingly dependent on IT and that there was a need to apprise all stakeholders that technology and IT could not provide solutions without proper security.

Govt to enforce security system to control cyber crimes
A National Information Security Framework will soon be enforced to combat cyber crimes in the country, said Ammar Hussain Jaffri, the project director of the National Response Center for Cyber Crimes, on Thursday. He said this while addressing the International Information Security Conference 2006: Challenges for Pakistan, organised by Total Communications and sponsored by the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), the World Call, the Netsol Technologies and the Juniper Networks.

Inquiry demanded into journalists murder
The MQM Rabita committee has demanded of the government to order an inquiry into the murder of senior Journalist, Malik Mohammed Ismail, in Islamabad. The committee stated this in a statement issued here on Thursday. It observed that due to the killing of Malik Ismail, an atmosphere of unrest has developed among the journalists and the government should take some concrete steps to quash this disturbance.

CPJ calls for investigation into journalists murder
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged an immediate, high-level investigation into the murder of Muhammad Ismail, Islamabad bureau chief of Pakistan Press International (PPI). CPJ, quoting Mazhar Abbas, secretary-general of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, noted that Ismails body was found on Wednesday morning near his home in Islamabad with his head smashed. The Associated Press reported a police investigator saying that an iron bar may have been used as the weapon.

Joint team convened to probe journalist's murder
A joint team of police, FIA and secret agencies has been convened to make headway to the criminals involved in the brutal murder of veteran journalist Malik Ismail, Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said here Thursday. He said this while talking to a journalists' delegation led by Rawalpindi Islamabad Press Club Secretary Afzal Butt, who met him to show their concern and sense of insecurity of the journalists community over the situation.

PM orders inquiry into journalists murder
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday ordered an inquiry into the gruesome murder of senior journalist Muhammad Ismail Malik.
It is extreme sad and I have ordered an inquiry so that the culprits are awarded exemplary punishment, the prime minister told reporters here after a function. At the sometime, the Interior Ministry, following the prime ministers directives, has constituted a six-member committee to probe the blind murder case of the senior Journalist Ismail Malik, said an official.

CPNE slams killing of journalists
The Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) has strongly condemned the serial killing of the journalists in the country and has demanded the immediate arrest the killers. In a joint statement issued here President CPNE Fasih Iqbal and General Secretary Wamiq Zuberi have said the government had failed to protest its citizens who were exposed to acts of terrorism and lawlessness in the country.

Journalists protest attacks on colleagues
The journalist community on Thursday protested the killing of a senior journalist in Islamabad and an attack on another journalist in Shabqadar. The journalists were about to enter the Peshawar Press Club after protesting against the killing of Muhammad Ismail Malik in Islamabad when they heard of an attack on a district correspondent of a local Urdu newspaper.

Demo against journalist's killing
Local journalists Thursday staged a protest demonstration against the brutal killing of Mohammad Ismail Khan, resident editor Pakistan Press International (PPI), and condemned the cold blooded killing of the senior journalist. Syed Bukhar Shah, president Peshawar Press Club, General Secretary of Khyber of Union of Journalist Syed Ansar Abbas and other senior journalists lead the protest demonstration on Shirsha Suri Road where the media men raised slogans against the government that had been failed to protect the journalists' community.

DG Enforcement Pemra says no channel licences issued on sectarian basis; thousands earning foreign exchange by working in 50 channels of country
Director-General Enforcement Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Rana Altaf Majeed has said the media can play a vital role in bringing an end to terrorism. Delivering a special lecture here at the School of Media Art and Design, University of Bedfordshire, he said the government of Pakistan has not issued a single channel licence on the basis of religion or sect. He said electronic media has proved very effective and thousands of people are working in the 50 channels of the country. Rana said Pakistan is a land of vast business opportunities in South Asia, and is marching towards prosperity and bright future through utilisation of electronic media, modern resources and advanced techniques.
