Attack on Media Killing Journalists caught in crossfire |
| |
Reporters and photographers were the worst victims of the crossfire between the personnel of law enforcement agencies and the students of Lal Masjid as one of them died and four others injured while covering the event on Tuesday. The most unfortunate was Javed Khan of Daily Markaz who lost his life after he was hit by a bullet thought to have been fired by the Rangers who had taken up position on the rooftop of a school in front of the environment ministry near the mosque. Mr Khan, who received bullets in his chest and neck, was immediately taken to the CDA Hospital in an ambulance, but he could not survive. Mr Khan was also associated with a UK-based DM Digital TV. Another TV cameraman Israr Ahmed, working for CNBC channel, is struggling for his life at Shifa International Hospital where he was brought in a critical condition. According to eye-witnesses, Israr Ahmed too received bullets fired by the Rangers from the rooftops of some of the nearby houses. Hospital sources said, Israr’s condition is stated to be critical as one of the bullets has damaged his spinal cord. Both Javed Khan and Israr Ahmed were injured when they were filming the burning vehicles parked inside the building of the ministry of environment. Another photographer Wahab Saleem of The Post suffered a bullet injury on his hand. Mr Saleem, however, was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment at the CDA Hospital. Azhar bin Karim of Aaj TV was hurt in stampede. Earlier, bureau chief of Geo TV Absar Alam was injured after he was hit by a stone thrown by the students of the Lal Masjid. He was taken to the Federal Government Services Hospital where doctors performed stitching on his head.

Editorial “Khabrain office attack” |
| |
The armed attack on the Khabrain Group of Newspapers in Karachi, in which its main gate, reception and parking area were destroyed, is condemnable in the strongest possible terms. The city district government officials also destroyed the communications system of the newspapers, causing production to shut down, besides holding the entire staff hostage. The attack was led by Nazim Jamshed Town Javed Akhtar who, accompanied by dozens of armed men, forcedly entered the Khabrain Group offices and badly damaged two cars and four motorbikes in the parking area. What is equally disappointing is that the police personnel, who were standing just a few hundred yards from the offices, remained silent spectators.

Critique on Media Media responsible for arson at ministry: Faisal |
| |
Federal Environment Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat has condemned the Lal Masjid students’ action of setting ablaze the Environment Ministry’s building and held the media responsible for the incident. “We had demanded security from the Islamabad administration and police eight months ago in view of the proximity with Lal Majid, but they did not pay heed to our demand,” he said. He said the private television channels were responsible for the incident because they had aired baseless reports that Rangers had been deployed in the ministry’s building. He said that these reports provoked the madrassa students to set fire to the building and official vehicles. |

Media Regulation FM stations banned from airing foreign broadcasts: PEMRA |
| |
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has not granted permission to any FM Radio station to air foreign broadcasts, according to its press release. It said international broadcast practices in developed countries did not allow indigenous FM radio stations to sell airtime to international or national news. It said PEMRA was, however, examining the good practices being followed in the developed world and hoped to settle the issue in consultation with stakeholders. The authority was of the view that a uniform policy had to be put in place before any foreign news house could be allowed to buy airtime from an FM Radio. PEMRA defended its move by saying that this by no means meant curbs on the freedom of expression because PEMRA always welcomed foreign broadcasts. A host of foreign channels had also been granted landing rights. PEMRA regretted the fact that some FM radio stations had started the unauthorised hourly news service of a foreign channel which had to be stopped. It said nothing contravening the laws of the country or government policy would be allowed. In 2004, some FM radio stations illegally sold their airtime to foreign broadcasters when notices were issued for their closure. It said PEMRA was taken to court where the case was adjudicated in PEMRA’s favour. All illegal foreign broadcasts on FM Radio were also stopped in 2005.

Radio FM Listening | Shame! Shame! Shame! By Sehrish Wasif |
| |
“Of course, there are others who have also been caught of this certain crime and one of them of course is Raja Haider, radio presenter on Power 99 FM, who boasts one of the biggest listener ships in radio. Of course, in this era love is a big hit, and by selling his proclaimed ?Pyar Ishq aur Mohobbat?, he may be doing a social service, but it is often heard that he sometimes crosses the line and starts discussing things that an individual cannot listen to while sitting with his family without feeling embarrassed. Obviously , he may think that theses are things worth discussing, but is it not better for the Power Fm 99 authorities to start the show with the proclamation that ?this show is not advisable to be heard by people below a certain age?.”
