10 attacks on Pakistani media persons in July

Ten separate incidents of attack on media in Pakistan were reported in national newspapers during the month of July 2006, according to a monthly report on the state of media violations in the country released here Thursday. The number if similar incidents in January, February, March, April, May and June was Six, seven, 11, six, five and 13 respectively.

Journalist, brother injured

Two people including a senior journalist sustained bullet injuries when they were ambushed near brick kiln on Lakki Darra Tang road on late Wednesday night. According to details, a senior journalists and former president of Lakki press club Haji Samar Gul along with his brother Sanam Gul and one of his friends name Muhammad Yousaf was on the way towards Lakki when his step brother Rahim Gul and his sons including Shahaab Gul and Wahab Gul opened indiscriminate firing on them.

Journalists set up hunger strike camp

Journalists set up a hunger strike camp in front of the press club on Thursday to protest against the police for not taking action against Powerlooms Workers Union patron M Saifullah Cheema and his accomplices, who allegedly burnt copies of newspapers some days ago for carrying a news item of Powerlooms Owner Association.

PEMRA's ineffective monitoring Cable operators telecasting pirated, erotic programmes

Ineffective enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, negligence on the part of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and lack of complainants has encouraged cable operators to telecast local and foreign movies, dramas and documentaries without authorisation from the competent authorities.

European media team visits PU

A European media delegation consisting of ten members visited the Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) at the Punjab University . German Parliament Senior Referent Mr Sarmad and Institute of International Relations Director , Warsaw University Prof Edward Halizak headed the delegations from Germany and Poland respectively.

Shooting of movie on Pearl 's life begins

The shooting of a movie on slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl began on Thursday, and some scenes were filmed near Metropole hotel under extra-ordinary security. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will work together on a movie based on the life of Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan .

PAL publishes five books

The Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) has published five more books as a part of its series ‘Makers of Pakistani Literature' to populariase the local writers. In a simple launching ceremony of the new books at the PAL Thursday, Chairman Iftikhar Arif said the series would help transfer Pakistan's literary heritage to the young generation and the international community in handy shape.

Documentary urges people not to stigmatise patients

A documentary depicting the ordeal of HIV/Aids patients was screened by a group of PTV artistes in collaboration with the UNICEF aiming to send a message to the masses that the stigma associated with the disease was unfounded and patients suffering from the disease needed love and affection.

Pushto song for HIV, AIDS patients

A six-minute Pushto song, prepared by the artistes of Pakistan Television, aimed at creating awareness among the masses about the HIV/AIDS disease screened in the Peshawar Press Club Thursday. The video song was sponsored by Unicef, in which noted artiste Arshad Hussain played a key role, whose role was an AIDS patient, besides Abaseen Yousafzai produced the song and Fizza Faiz sung it.

CDG likely to act against CDs dealers, cable operators

The City District Government (CDG) is likely to start a grand operation in the coming week against shopkeepers selling porn movies and cable operators showing prohibited channels.
