Media in Court SHC extends stay against PEMRA ban on BBC news broadcast |
| |
Justice Azizullah Memon of the Sindh High Court (SHC), on Friday, extended a stay order till Monday obtained against the Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority’s (PEMRA) order to ban the broadcast of BBC’s news bulletins by a local FM radio channel. The channel had been airing BBC news bulletins since June 22 in Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan. Counsel for the appellant Adnan I Chaudhry stated that PEMRA had previously allowed the channel to air BBC’s news bulletins and that they did not violate PEMRA Ordinance 2002 or the license conditions of the FM channel. Therefore, the restriction imposed by PEMRA was against the fundamental right of freedom of speech. Chaudhry said that PEMRA had been informed about the contract signed between BBC and the radio channel and they had approved the contract. The SHC’s single bench, after hearing the final arguments of the appellant’s counsel, adjourned the matter for August 6, when counsel for PEMRA Kashif Haneef would present his argument. |

Critique on Media Letter to Editor “PTV’s decision” |
| |
Bashir Hussain Azad, “The local programmes of PTV started telecasting from the national TV from August 1, 2007. This is a major decision taken by PTV authorities, but we envisage in this decision the PTV high-ups are unaware of ground reality ties in areas like Chitral and Dir, including major areas of Malakand Division. These areas are neglected, because we do not have other channels except PTV-1 and PTV World and we do not have cable facility in Chitral. The Pushto-speaking community of Chitral and Drosh were keenly interested in local programmes but these people were deprived of local programmes with the implementation of this PTV bold decision. Chitral district has its own unique culture and tradition, but PTV never gave any time for the preservation and presentation of this unique culture at the national level. PTV is a representative channel of the whole country and it should give specific time to every culture of our beloved country, otherwise the disharmony and deprivation would increase among local communities. It is indeed the responsibility of PTV to decrease the gulf between the people of Pakistan and make it a united nation, so we can progress and become a strong nation.” |
