Riots erupt in Turbat after arrest of editor

Riots erupted in Turbat Monday after the arrest of the editor of a local newspaper. The police and of law enforcement agencies foiled various attempts to burn the public property. As per details, hundreds of people protested over the arrest of Editor Chamag Rafiq Ajiz in Turbat and tried to burn public property. Angry mob pelted stone on shops, causing damage to windowpanes. Police fired teargas shells to disperse the mob.

Media most powerful tool in world: Orakzai

NWFP Governor Lt Gen (r) Ali Muhammad Jan Orakzai said media was the most powerful tool in the contemporary world which had the ability to mould public opinion, create awareness amongst the masses about social evils and generate debate on various issues of national and international importance in order to provide guidance towards their resolution.

Durrani calls for enhanced Pak-Turk media ties

The Pakistani and Turkish media organisations should establish closer ties to meet the challenges being faced by the Muslim world. Talking to a Turkish media delegation, Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Muhammad Ali Durrani said, “ Turkey and Pakistan are friendly nations and share historic, cultural, religious and traditional relations.” An eminent literary figure of Turkey , Ali Kulebi is leading the delegation. Its other members include Srkan Demirtas of Daily Radiled, Can Ayberk Ertuna of CNN Turk TV, and Bilal Cetin of Vatan Daily. They are on a week-long visit to Pakistan .

In the minds of common people, 'police' would usually signify a feeling of awe and fear. Having been introduced in the sub-continent by the British it was used primarily by the imperial power as a weapon for enforcing its colonial authority and for crushing the people and bringing them to its will.

Journalist Lateef Jafri passes away

Veteran journalist Lateef Jafri was found dead in his Gulistan-i-Jauhar residence on Monday. He was 74. Mr Jafri's relatives said he had been living alone because his wife was with his Canada-based son. His daughter lived in the United Arab Emirates . A diabetic patient, Mr Jafri is believed to have died of either a heart attack or a brain haemorrhage.

Rajshahi --- Jamaat-Shibir leaders burned a large number of copies of the Prothom Alo at Bagmara yesterday protesting a news item. Earlier, they held a protest rally under the banner of Upazila Madrasa Teachers' Council and criticised different progressive newspapers.
