Media Miscellaneous Newspaper hawkers can’t determine closed holidays: APNS |
| |
The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) strongly rejects the statement of Akhbar Farosh Union, Multan, regarding newspaper holiday and declares unequivocally that the Akhbar Farosh unions do not determine the closed days of newspapers but it is the jurisdiction of the APNS to decide non-publication days for newspapers, stated a spokesman for the APNS. APNS President Hameed Haroon has stated that an agreement was reached between the APNS and the representative body of Akhbar Farosh and news agents, the All Pakistan Akhbar Farosh Federation over the list of holidays for six closed days and the APNS has abided by the agreement in letter and spirit and expected that the Federation and its unions will also honour their commitments. The APNS categorically stated that it would not accept any further increase in the agreed schedule of holidays and advises the Akhbar Farosh Union, Multan, in the interest of its members to withdraw its stand immediately, failing which, the APNS will be justified to implement a new distribution system in Multan or any affected area after 30 days with the participation of those Akhbar Farosh and news agents who would be prepared to fulfil the long standing demand of the readers to supply the newspapers regularly.

Child marriage: media asked to play role in creating awareness |
| |
A media workshop to create awareness against child marriages and corporeal punishment was told that a bill against child marriages has been prepared which when passed can send violators to 10 years behind bars. The print and electronic media were exhorted to play their role in creating awareness against child marriages and the damaging effects of corporeal punishment on the child. Speakers at the two-day workshop organised by the National Commission for Child Welfare and Development (NCCWD) in collaboration with Plan Pakistan which started here on Tuesday emphasized the need to check these ugly practices through publicity and persuasion as law alone could not effectively address such social evils.

Lahorites are keen to know the ownership of FM 92, which could be heard at a frequency of 92. The channel only contains music and a promo which informs listeners that they are listening to FM 92. To get information about the channel owners, The Post team contacted Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) which said they did not have any information regarding the channel as they hadn't issued licence to any such channel. Whereas the channel also did not belong to Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, it added. Pemra has so far issued 105 licenses to FM channels, including seven campus radios, out of which 77 are operational. |

Art Karachi: Artists seek to revive public artworks |
| |
Karachi, one of the mega-cities of the world, is perhaps the only one devoid of any significant public artworks. It would be fair enough to blame decades of religious fanaticism, quite similar to that of the Taliban that had resulted into the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, for the prevailing situation in the city. Fortunately, winds of change have started to blow as the local artists are all geared up to revive Karachi’s public artworks. Drawing an analogy between the Taliban and the past governments in Pakistan, Shahid Rassam said that fanatic and ruthless government functionaries had done the same to Karachi’s statues long ago. Rassam is one of a handful of local artists working for the revival of the city’s public art, which had flourished under British rule in India and survived for a couple of decades until the early years of military dictator Ziaul Haq. The city’s public art crumbled under Zia’s rule, as culture became an early casualty of a regime that nurtured religious fanaticism. The rot had set in under Zia’s predecessor, Ayub Khan, the first in a long line of military rulers, who held power from 1958-1969.
