A daily review of media coverage of media and communications issues

VIOLATION AGAINST MEDIA

‘Zaagh' vendetta claimed life of Hayatullah's brother?

The mysterious murder of 12-year-old Bashir, brother of slain journalist Hayatullah Khan, in Mirali town in North Waziristan, had not only aggrieved his immediate family, it has also shocked journalists all over Pakistan. Human rights activists took this murder as another attempt to torture the killed journalist's family with non-stop acts of violent bullying by yet to be discovered elements or 'agencies'. After a week long stay in North Waziristan and detailed discussions with multiple sources, however, this correspondent is compelled to believe that the murder of Bashir might have been a textbook case of tribal vendetta.

FM LISTENING:

‘Red Talk' raises issues

One of the recent criticisms flung at FM channels has been of their reluctance to openly talk about various political problems faced by the country, while television channels show a much deeper insight on these issues. LETTERS TO EDITOR:

TV licence collection

Pakistan Television collects Rs2.4 billion in licence fee every year. A few days ago the WAPDA chairman in an interview said that the actual figure of electricity consumers in the country is 16 million. When I multiplied it by the licence fee that is collected on each bill the total came to a staggering Rs4.80 billion. How come PTV is getting only half of it?
