Marri had been missing since June 27. “These methods seem to have become the army’s preferred tool for scaring journalists suspected of links with the Baloch movement,” said the RSF in a press release, calling for an investigation into the kidnapping.

In countries where rule of law is non-negotiable, public office holders have to be accountable to elected representatives through defined systems of governance, not just after they have left office but on a daily basis, as long as they are in power. In many instances, they can be accountable as long as they are alive, even though out of office, after either evidence of any wrongdoing or impropriety emerges against them or after the systems are developed enough to tackle them (e.g., Pinochet of Chile).
