CJFE to honour journalists from Colombia, Egypt, Pakistan

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) will be honouring journalists from Colombia , Egypt and Pakistan for bravery at its 2006 International Press Freedom Awards banquet in Toronto in November. Hollman Morris, Abeer Al-Askary and Hayat Ullah Khan have been named winners of this year's awards, which recognise journalists who overcome great odds to cover the news. Morris, a veteran Colombian journalist, has been the target of multiple threats over the years because of his work. His television programme Contravía addresses some of the most difficult and controversial issues in Colombian society, including atrocities that have been committed by all sides of Colombia 's long-running armed conflict. The programme also reports on some of the most important human rights cases in Colombia , including the unsolved murder in 2001 of popular journalist Jaime Garzón.

Bill seeking changes to media laws introduced

People's Party Parliamentarians (PPP) MNA Sherry Rehman on Tuesday introduced the Freedom of Information Bill 2006 in the National Assembly seeking several changes in the six media ordinances promulgated by the military regime and making freedom of access to information a fundamental human right. The bill, which was originally submitted by Ms Rehman some two years ago, was referred to the standing committee concerned of the National Assembly by the speaker for its clause-wise examination. http://www.dawn.com/2006/09/06/nat5.htm

M.Phil journalism at PU

The Peshawar University 's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has formally started M.Phil classes. According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, the courses for PhD and M.Phil have been compiled by the teachers and the chairman of the department which have recently been approved by the academic council of the varsity. The first batch of M.Phil course comprises Enamur Rehman, Faizullah Jan, Syed Irfan Ashraf, Gul Wahab and Bakht Zaman.

M Phil journalism starts at Peshawar varsity

Journalism and Mass Communication Department of the Peshawar University (PU) has formally started M.Phil classes. According to a press release issued here Tuesday, the course for the PhD and M.Phil was compiled by the teaching staff of the Journalism Department headed by Chairman Prof Dr Shahjehan Kakakhel and was recently approved by the Academic Council.

FM channels revive radio culture

FM channels have revived the radio culture in Pakistan through its non-stop entertaining programmes. The FM channels have also injected a new spirit into radio-listening which had become very limited over the last couple of days due to government controlled stereotype programmes.

Journalists urged to avoid sensationalism: Covering tribal area events

NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai has urged journalists to be realistic and objective and try to avoid sensationalism while filing reports on tribal areas. Talking to a group of tribal area journalists led by Nasir Mohmand at the Governor's House on Monday, he said they should ‘‘portray the real picture and positive aspects of the events taking place in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas''. He urged them to properly project public welfare activities going on in the areas.

Journalist Lateef Jafri passes away

Karachi --- Veteran journalist Lateef Jafri was found dead in his Gulistan-iJauhar residence on Monday. He was 74.

Mr Jafri's relatives said he had been living alone because his wife was with his Canadabased son. His daughter lived in the United Arab Emirates . A diabetic patient, Mr Jafri is believed to have died of either a heart attack or a brain haemorrhage.

Use your pen for promoting unity, journalists urged

Federal minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Salim Saifullah Khan has urged upon the media persons to use their pen for stregthening solidarity/unanimity and bringing an end to bias and prejudice in the country. The journalists can do this through their write ups in right direction and positive approach to the various issues", the minister said after administering oath to the office bearers of Lucky union of journalists/ press club Naurang here the other day.

FM LISTENING: Voice of Women

Voice of Women (is the name given to the radio channel solely operated and run by the students of first women university, yes, I am talking about Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU). You could listen to the channel on frequency module 96.6 five days a week, every evening from 4-5 PM. If you want to listen to it in the morning, you could get the repeat transmission every day from eleven in the morning to twelve in the noon.

Is writing, reading novels a woman's forte?

Foreign magazines and papers project woman as the essential reader and claim that it was the same reading habit which plays an important part in motivating writers to produce more novels and magazines. Interestingly, such studies highlight that men spend their evenings watching TV programmes and shows while the women read. However, the same study proves the reverse in Pakistan , as a survey suggests that men do read to some extent and women take least interest in reading and instead spend their evenings watching TV plays and shows.

CHINA : Journalist to appeal against jail sentence

New York Times journalist Zhao Yan yesterday appealed against a three-year prison sentence he received for alleged fraud, insisting he was innocent. Today, we filed an appeal for Zhao Yan. He thinks the original verdict is wrong," said one of Zhao's lawyers, Guan Anping. The court convicted Zhao of fraud in a closed-door trial on August 25, but acquitted him of a more serious charge of leaking state secrets.

INDIA : Free speech vs fair trial

New Delhi --- In a bid to restore balance between free speech and fair trial, the Law Commission on Thursday came up with a set of controversial proposals to rein in what it called "trial by media". Reacting to aggressive coverage of crime stories, the commission recommended that the media be barred from reporting anything prejudicial to an accused, right from the time he is arrested in the course of the investigation.

BANGLADESH : Photojournalist Salahuddin passes away

Md Salahuddin, chief photojournalist of the daily Inqilab and member of the National Press Club, passed away yesterday at Birla Heart Foundation in Kolkata at the age of 54, says a press release. He was kept in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after completion of the second open-heart surgery on September 2 but he didn't regain his senses. Doctors declared him dead yesterday morning.
