Media rights groups accuse US army of censorship |
| |
International media rights groups have called for an explanation from the US army for threats and censorship against Afghan journalists, two of them working for the Associated Press, while covering civilian deaths in shooting by US special forces on the road between Kabul and Jalalabad in the east of Afghanistan. US marines on March 4 “killed a score of civilians and injured around 30 others” along the road after they came under an attack from a suicide bomber in which several people died, east of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province.

RSF expresses concern at violence against women journalists |
| |
As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day for the 30th time on March 8, global media rights group Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF), or Reporters Without Borders, voiced concern on Tuesday about an increase in violence against women journalists worldwide. “More and more women journalists are the victims of murder, arrest, threats or intimidation,” the Paris-based press freedom organisation said in a statement. “This increase is due to the fact that more and more women are working as journalists, holding riskier jobs in the media and doing investigative reporting likely to upset someone.”

Cinema's demolition |
| |
This concerns the recent demolition of the Falaksair cinema, previously known as the Lansdowne Theatre in Peshawar. The building on main Saddar Road had been built in the 1930s by a Sikh businessman and was a very fine example of gothic and oriental architecture, beautiful and unique in its style. This is a bad omen for the country's film industry, which is already in decline. The sad part is that a very fine site of culture and heritage was sacrificed for yet another modern day shopping plaza. This building needed to be protected and restored to its former glory rather than be demolished by the building mafia.
