Media in Courts BHC orders medical treatment Munir Mengal |
| |
A division bench of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) has ordered the officials concerned of the provincial home department to provide medical treatment to petitioner Munir Ahmed Mengal, detained under Section 3 of the MPO. The order came when his mother informed the court on Thursday that his son was suffering seriously and authorities were not providing medical treatment to him. Advocate General Salahuddin Mengal submitted the letter of the Home department regarding extension of detention period of the petitioner for another month on the grounds that he is involved in anti-state activities, is a potential threat to law and order, and has close links with the Baloch Liberation Army.
Besides, it stated that he has launched a website “Baloch Voice” spreading anti-state propaganda, causing damage to the national integrity. He is also wanted for launching a Balochi language TV channel “Baloch Voice” on the pattern of the website aimed at destabilising the country. The advocate general also submitted another letter of the Home department, stating that a joint investigation team has been constituted for interrogating the detainee. The bench consisting of BHC Chief Justice Amanullah Khan Yasinzai and Justice Akhtar Zaman Malghani was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Munir Mengal on Aug 15, challenging his detention. The matter will be taken up again for hearing on Sept 10. |

Critique on Media Letter to Editor, “Excessive freedom” |
| |
Arif, “Hardly any day goes by when we do not hear about the unprecedented media freedom in the country. Whether or not the media is really ‘free’ is a long debate. But what I would like to know is whether this ‘relative freedom’ that the media enjoys today has done anything for the collective good of the nation. Although the media is doing a good job of keeping the public informed, I still believe that today’s excessive media freedom has caused some negative effects, namely dishonesty or extreme bias in journalism. If the media can overcome these negativities, it would go a long way in the media revolution in Pakistan.” |

Letter to Editor, “Role of the media” |
| |
Aun Hussain, “Lately we have been bombarded by advertisements, on TV and in newspapers, on how the now ubiquitous General Musharraf is taking the country towards prosperity and greatness. The advertisements on television also show Pervez Elahi’s reforms that are transforming Punjab. These marketing campaigns have the dual goal of bolstering the failing popularity of the current regime and muzzling the media by providing generous contributions to their bottom lines through contributions from the national exchequer. It is shameful that public money is being wasted in this way. Is this why we pay taxes? But then, I guess Musharaff is working on a one-point agenda of continuing his rule and does not concern himself about such matters. While it is my sincere belief that the media has brought about a silent revolution in this country and has contributed immensely towards our national growth and integration, it still needs to question how such falsified and propagandist advertisements can be allowed to run on their pages/channels with public money. In case the media decides that it will not stop showing such advertisements, it should also run advertisements for other parties that directly question the claims of the government. |

Govt-media ties good: Aziz |
| |
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday dispelled the impression that relationship between the government and media had soured after recent incidents. He was talking to media personnel after laying the foundation stone for the National Press Club in the federal capital. The ceremony was held at the Prime Minister secretariat for security reasons. Mr Aziz said that at times media did ‘cross the line’ but the government “shows tolerance and understanding”. The National Press Club will be built in the city’s F-6/1 sector at an estimated cost of Rs170 million. Mr Aziz said the government had given unprecedented freedom to media which should enable it to play a responsible and balanced role in a democratic society. He urged the media to exercise its freedom in the national interest. “You need to differentiate between a critic and a cynic. Critic analyses facts he said. He said that the presidential elections would be held between Sept 15 and Nov 15, to be followed by general elections in the next few months. He said the ruling coalition partners were geared up for electoral activity and opposition parties were also expected to participate. He hoped that people would cast their votes “carefully and honestly”. Referring to the Wage Board Award for journalists, the prime minister said that unity in the ranks of journalists would help them achieve success. He said the government had contacted newspaper owners and there had been some development over the issue. “We want … every journalist in the country to be given due rights,” he added. He announced a grant of Rs40 million for the National Press Club. He also announced free medical treatment for journalists in government hospitals.

Art National Art Gallery: a 20-year-wait |
| |
Rs 456 million spent on the project | More than 700 master pieces on display
At least after over 20 years the National Art Gallery (NAG) has come into existence to entertain art lovers. Surrounded by beautiful green mountains of Margalla Hills behind the Marriott Hotel, the huge building complex of the NAG has been completed after a long delay and wastage of funds. The delay in the construction of the gallery not only hindered the promotion of arts in the federal capital but also caused huge financial loss. Many big names were behind the delay and are still hidden due to their influence in the federal capital. During the past 20 years twice funds and support were allocated in 1986 and then in 1992 but somehow project failed to materialise within the timeframe. The foundation stone was laid in March 1996 but funding was then diverted to construct a convention centre. DG Naeem Tahir refused to comment on the issue owing to the sensitivity of the matter and involvement of many eminent personalities and bureaucrats. When put the same query to Jamal Shah, he pleaded ignorance. Under tight security the beautiful arts castle with huge gates invites the visitors to step inside. Nearly, Rs 456 million were spent on the gallery. |

Copyrights Dealing with piracy by M.A.Vasiq Eqbal |
| |
“Some publishing houses have started publishing low price editions after acquiring licences, but still the numbers are quite small. If the government wants foreign investment, it should first change the atmosphere according to international markets, and also give official support to the private sector. Leading foreign investors are reluctant to invest in Pakistan, which means that the government will have to take substantial steps to get rid of piracy, because as they say, “There is no sweet without sweat.”

Telecommunication Retailers come under PTA’s microscope: Cell phone connection ills |
| |
Retailers and not the franchises of cell phone companies are ‘mainly responsible’ for issuance of connections without maintaining record, reveals a survey conducted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. The PTA had started a random inspection of mobile phone companies’ franchises and retailers throughout the country in the first week of last month. Initial findings reveal that “a good number of retailers are not following the instructions regarding issuance of mobile phone connections. Such retailers do not bother to obtain a copy of computerised national identity card (CNIC) from the person to whom they issue a SIM”. The SIMs of one cellular company (Paktel) are even being sold at different intersections in Lahore, says the survey. |
