Letter to Editor “On press freedom” |
| |
Siama Iqbal comments, “The government is making a complete farce of its claims about press freedom by acting against the electronic media. On Sunday, the transmission of Geo TV was suddenly suspended when Dr Shahid Masood's programme was being aired. That is because he was truly unveiling the wrongdoings of the government. President Musharraf proudly claims credit for his regime on media freedoms but the ban on Geo and Aaj TV is a clear depiction of his government's hypocrisy. Pakistan is among the top 10 countries of the world with the worst kind of media abuses in practice. Threats to journalists and blocking of the TV transmissions is the routine here now. The government is trapped in its own net; it claimed to have given freedom to the media, now it is blocking the media when that freedom bites it. Musharraf needs to think the implications of this issue for his rule very seriously because history proves that the governments dented by the media were eventually demolished and never recovered again.”

Movies Countdown begins, In The Name of God |
| |
Firing the latest round in Khuda Kay Liye’s publicity campaign, the soundtrack of the film was launched at a hotel here on Saturday though the film’s celebrated director Shoaib Mansoor was — true to his reclusive nature — conspicuous by his absence. Speaking at the press briefing, Imran Aslam, the head of a local television network handling the film’s marketing, said that the picture was a labour of love for Mansoor. The story deals with the plight of Muslims post-September 11, especially the supposed battle for the “soul of Islam” being fought between the liberal and more conservative strains of believers. When asked about the release date, Aslam coyly said that a date had not yet been finalised, but a source revealed that the film would be released on July 20 in Karachi. Interestingly, Shoaib Mansoor has unleashed an uncharacteristically harsh volley of criticism against his former protégé Junaid Jamshed in the statement that accompanied the press kit. “I felt that a confused man like Junaid had no right to confuse thousands of his youthful followers. I had given him 16 years of my life as a true friend and had played my role in his professional life to the best of my abilities. How could he throw away our 16 years just like that without even consulting me? ...” said Mansoor while discussing the impetus behind the film.

Copyrights PU follows GCU on plagiarism penalty strategy |
| |
Punjab University (PU) has followed in the footsteps of Government College University (GCU) in resolving the matter of incessant plagiarism by its teachers of Centre for High Energy Physics (CHEP). Plagiarism charges on PU’s CHEP director Dr Fazl-e-Aleem and teachers Rashid Ahmad, Sohail Afzal Tahir, M Alam Saeed and Maqsood Ahmad surfaced in April 2006 and several committees were formed to investigate the matter, despite the varsity’s preliminary committee’s confirmation of the charges. The teachers were accused of copying an article by Prof Chris Llewellyn and publishing it in a journal called ‘Science in Africa’. They did so without crediting the original author.
