PBA, PEMRA agree on code for live coverage
  The Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) agreed on Tuesday not to allow broadcast of “gory and sensitive” scenes that could encourage terrorists and traumatise viewers, App reported. The agreement was reached in a meeting between the PBA and PEMRA Chairman Iftikhar Rasheed at the PEMRA Regional Headquarters. Iftikhar said PEMRA would hold a workshop to train television staff about the coverage of violent incidents.

  PBA, CAP to draw up codes of conduct
  The “illegal” activities of cable operators should be monitored strictly by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) and owners of electronic media organizations demanded during an hour-long meeting on Tuesday. “In Karachi alone, cable operators generate Rs 100 per month (per connection) from advertising. This does not include the subscription charges levied on customers (approximately Rs 379 per month),” PBA representatives told PEMRA Chairman Iftikhar Rashid.

  MEDIA IN COURT
State given fortnight to seek govt stand on PEMRA (Amendment) Ord.
  The counsel for the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Kashif Hanif, stated Tuesday before a division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) that PEMRA never prohibited the live coverage of events. The division bench is hearing three identical petitions challenging 15 amendments in the PEMRA Ordinance. The counsel stated that the PEMRA Ordinance does not permit the authority or its chairman to restrict or prohibit the live coverage, and added that neither a notice was issued under the amended ordinance till date nor was any section enforced.

  Outcome of PBA code of conduct awaited
  The federal law officer on Tuesday informed the Sindh High Court that the voluntary code of conduct prepared by Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) regarding Pemra (amendment) Ordinance has been sent to the ministry of law for approval. The court was hearing the petitions filed by the Sindh Bar Council members Salahuddin Gandapur and Mohammad Aqil, People’s Lawyers Forum and local journalist Iqbal Kazmi against the amendments in the Pemra Ordinance-2002 through Ordinance No. XXVII of 2007, contending it was in violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens of Pakistan.

Two-day workshop for APP regional journalists
  A two-day second regional training workshop for District Correspondents working with APP started here on Tuesday with a view to help enhance their professional skills catering to the needs of competitive media sector. The workshop is being attended by district correspondents across the country besides the newly-appointed journalists. It is a part of series of workshops to be held this month to provide working journalists with an opportunity to utilise their potential to optimum. The extensive training plan has been initiated with the directives of Information Minister for revampingprofessional activities of the APP district correspondents.

  TV Journalists Association was formed A TV Journalists Association was formed here on Tuesday. Nisar Ahmad Khan of Dawn News TV was elected president of the association. At a meeting held at a local hotel.

  Press club PC-2 sent for approval
  The stone-laying ceremony of the international standard building of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad press club (RIPC) would be held this month while PC-2 of the Rs30 million projects has been sent to the planning commission for final approval. The design of the project would be prepared by the Nespak and it would be constructed in sector F-6/1 on 6 kanal land. The expenditures would be borne by the federal government. This was informed in a meeting of the ministry of information and broadcasting held here With Secretary Information Syed Anwar Mehmood in the chair. Besides officials of the ministry, president RIPC Mushtaq Minhas, Vice-president Jameel Mirza,Senior Vice president Aroosa Alam and Secretary Afzal Butt were also present on the occasion.
