Two German journalists killed in Afghan ambush
Gunmen ambushed and killed two German journalists travelling in northern Afghanistan on Saturday, Afghan officials said. Police said the two, a man and woman, ambushed while travelling at night from Baghlan province to the central province of Bamiyan. “Unidentified insurgents sprayed their vehicle with bullets,” said General Azim Hashimi, security chief in Baghlan province, about 120 kms north of Kabul. The two, who police said were working on a documentary, had a driver but Hashimi said there was no word on him.

Canadian troop, two German journalists killed
An insurgent ambush in southern Afghanistan killed a Canadian soldier on Saturday, and the NATO-led force was struck by the first suicide attack in the east since taking command. A bomb struck troops with ISAF in Kandahar early on Saturday, and insurgents then opened fire on them, said an ISAF statement.

The Journalist and the Jihahdi', a powerful documentary film on the murder of Daniel Pearl and the role played in it by Omar Sheikh, a Briton of Pakistani extraction, was screened here to an invited audience at the French embassy on Thursday.

PTV to organise drama competition in Ramazan
Pakistan Television (PTV) is organising a drama competition for its Ramazan transmission. All PTV centres will participate in the competition, which has a prize of Rs 30,000. From the Lahore centre, Shaukat Zainul Abidin is producing Yai Faisla Hai. The play has been written by Iqbal Nazar and directed by Abidin himself. Talking to Daily Times Abadin said that the 50-minute play is based on the concept of distribution of wealth in Islam.

FM LISTENING:
FM channels tune in to audiences' taste in Ramazan
FM radio channels have tuned in to the listeners' needs during the month of Ramazan. All channels air special programmes during Sehr and Iftar times. FM 100 airs 13.5-hour long special Ramazan transmission, which starts at 4:30pm with Shanama-e-Islam. It evokes a new spirit in the Muslim youth. The channel airs Na'ats, Qawalis and Traveeh prayers from 7pm to 9pm. Similarly, recitations from the Holy Quran are broadcasted from 1am to 2:30am followed by Sehr transmission.

Speakers call for objective parliamentary reporting
Urging journalists to highlight positive and healthy content of parliamentary proceedings, speakers at a workshop demanded the government provide easy access to information on public material in order to prepare comprehensive and factual reports for their readers. The workshop titled "Role of Parliamentary Reporting in Strengthening Democratic Institutions" was held at Punjab Assembly Saturday under the aegis of Punjab Assembly Press Gallery Committee in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
