Attack on Media Restriction Journalists barred from Lal Masjid to attend Ghazi press conference |
| |
Lal Masjid deputy chief cleric Abdul Rasheed Ghazi invited reporters to a press conference in Lal Masjid on Sunday, but security forces refused entry to journalists and later, ARY Television reported, entered the Rawalpindi-Islamabad press club and harassed the journalists there. Ghazi had invited journalists for a press conference, pledging safe passage, but security forces believed it was a tactic to gain more hostages and thus did not allow reporters to enter the mosque. Ghazi was offered a telephonic press conference instead. Security personnel on Sunday evening accused journalists of violating curfew and told them they had been ordered to oust journalists from the danger zone, but an army major said it had been a misunderstanding, adding there were no orders to stop media coverage, the channel reported.

Lettet to Editor “Role of the media” |
| |
Ehsan Anwaar comments, “The president should also give it a thought that if almost every analyst and intellectual around a dozen media channels and innumerable newspapers are criticising the government and its policies, instead of something being wrong with the media, there must be something wrong with the policies. If the government still doubts the role of the media, it should talk to ordinary Pakistanis, because it will surely find out that probably for the first time in the country’s history the media is playing a positive role. Also ask the common person what he/she wants to see and they will say that they want to see exactly what the media is showing. It is another thing that the government has now finally succeeded in reining in the media by pressurising the owners of the media channels and by blackmailing the cable operators (although it denied the latter charge publicly). And in the end I would like to put another record straight. It is not because of the liberal policies of the president that so many electronic channels have cropped up. The broadcasting of leading channels actually started abroad, mostly in Dubai and England, and since the government could not do anything about them it started taking the credit of freeing the media and allowed some local channels as well.”

Theater Booked for reporting a crime? |
| |
In a recent event, Nasir Sheikh was detained because he and his wife, who were running a theater group for special and disabled children, had had the audacity to expose those behind his kidnapping. According to Sakeena Nasir, producer of her own theater group, her husband Nasir Sheikh was facing false charges on the behest of some influential persons because he revealed the identity of those who had kidnapped him in 2005. The story was bought forward when his wife submitted an application to move the Supreme Court against the detention of her husband, Nasir. Nasir and his brother-in-law, Muhammad Irtiza Khan were kidnapped by some people and kept in an illegal confinement in 2005 for a huge ransom. However, the kidnappers were compensated by being given an apartment and some other valuables. Later on, the couple exposed the details of the kidnappers and thereby the kidnappers, using their influence, had retaliated by indicting the two, Nasir and Irtiza, in cases of murder, suicide and owning weaponry. The two are now being detained, once again, at the Central Prison.
