Govt to launch parliament TV |
| |
The government has decided to launch a television channel for the live coverage of parliament proceedings, Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed told the Senate on Friday. Mushahid, also Secretary General of the Pakistan Muslim League, clashed with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Sher Afgan Niazi when he opposed media access to the standing committees of parliament. “This is a colonial attitude. We hide things from our own people. We are living in the 21st century.”

Mushahid asks for parliament TV for live proceedings |
| |
PML Secretary General Syed Mushahid Hussain has suggested that there should be separate parliament TV channel for live coverage of assembly proceedings. This channel should cover Assembly/Senate sessions and Standing Committee meetings. Dr. Afghan opposed that according to rules TV coverage can’t be allowed. Mushahid replied that in this new age, we should change our approach. We still hide facts from public, it is a colonial vision.

Pakistan’s web portal is up again, but with jolts |
| |
Pakistan government’s web portal — www.pakistan.gov.pk — along with a dozen other official websites of various departments and ministries is finally accessible after an outage since Thursday. The other affected websites included Ministry of IT & Telecommunication, Ministry of Commerce, E-Government Directorate (EGD) and others. ‘The News’ learnt through a number of cyber savvy professionals in Pakistan, the UK and Canada that the country’s prime cyber access point was inaccessible. Despite repeated phone calls by the web surfers and this correspondent to the concerned officials in the EGD of the IT & Telecom ministry, the portal could not be restored until late Thursday night.

Cafeteria issue |
| |
Former speaker of the National Assembly Gohar Ayub says the MNAs would be deprived of due projection on the private electronic media if the Parliament cafeteria remained shut on TV cameras. “The MPs would be the sufferers if they would not find electronic media persons in the cafeteria,” he told The News. Gohar Ayub said the issue could be resolved by restoring the cafeteria to its original shape by shifting the temporary office of the National Database & Registration Authority to somewhere else in the Parliament building. He stressed that the issue should be sorted out in a manner that satisfies every side. Another option is to allocate some proper place adjacent to the cafeteria to the TV channels as has been done in the UN building, he said. The former NA Speaker said the Parliament building’s precincts falls in the exclusive jurisdiction of the Speaker as he presides over the joint parliamentary session. All decisions relating to security measures or anything else are to be taken by the speaker, he said.

Quorum bogs PEMRA bill down in NA |
| |
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill designed mainly to allow newspaper owners to run private TV channels, which was presented in the lower house on Wednesday in the hope of passage on the same day, could not be passed due to quorum once again on Friday. The mediation committee of both the National Assembly and the Senate had recommended passage of the bill with some amendments in the original draft after it had been shuttling between the two houses of parliament since it was first tabled in the lower house in October 2004.

Obscene plays invade cable TV |
| |
Brimful of violence and vulgarity, Pushto CD dramas are being shown by cable operators right under the nose of the regulatory authorities. Having all alluring ingredients of a Pashto action movie, these dramas, produced by local production houses, are getting popular among citizens. “Hardly any different from Pashto movies subject-wise, the CD dramas are full of violent fight sequences, vulgar dances and obscene dialogues, and are shown without any censorship,” said a film critic. Despite the existence of a Council of Complaints (COC) under the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) in the NWFP, these dramas are shown on CD channels without any check.

Letter to Editor about TV fee |
| |
M.Y. Qureshi says that there are two electricity meters installed in my house, one each for the ground and first floors. The house is occupied by my family only and the TV set is only on the ground floor. When the government decided to charge the TV fee along with electricity bills a couple of years ago, I indicated to the LESCO authorities that I had a TV set only on the ground floor and should be charged for only one tv.

Year 2006 a tough for journalists |
| |
Secretary Information Jamiat-e-Islami S. A. Shami said in his message to Attock Press Club that year 2006 proved tough for journalists. Realistic journalism has become difficult for media community. Govt claims for media freedom are fake and baseless. Murders, abductions and violence have proved government claims wrong.
