SAMC condemns journalist’s killing |
| |
The South Asia Media Commission (SAMC) has condemned the killing of Ajmal Naqshbani, a young Afghan journalist, who was abducted along with the freed Italian journalist Danielle Mastrogiacomo in southern Afghanistan by Taliban militants. In a press statement issued on Monday, the newly-formed regional body to monitor media rights violations called on authorities to bring those responsible for Naqshbandi’s death to justice.“The perpetrators of this crime have shown absolute indifference to the value of human life by ignoring the calls of family, journalists and Afghans who with one voice called for Naqshbani’s safe return,” N Ram, editor-in-chief of The Hindu and the chairman of the SAMC, and Najam Sethi, the editor of Daily Times and general secretary of the commission, said. “The rights of journalists to go about their work, free from interference or harm, should be recognised and respected by all,” they said in the statement released by the commission’s regional coordinator Husain Naqi.
