  Every bit the journalist
Brawny and casually attired in faded jeans and a checked shirt, Assem El Qarsh looks every bit the seasoned journalist that he is. Editor of “Al-Ahram,” Egypt’s leading daily, El Qarsh’s journalistic flair becomes all the more lucid once he talks on various issues. He holds a highly analytical view of things and sees issues with a great depth of vision. Qarsh was in Karachi with his team as part of a media delegation from Egypt, on May 8, Tuesday to visit media organisations here and Islamabad. In an informal interactive meeting with a group of journalists from The News, Qarsh had some profound things to say — things that reminded us that no matter how hard we try, neutrality and objectivity are “just not there” in our work. Having said that, he realises that a thinking, perceptive and intelligent human being cannot be neutral. He said every journalist is sure to have his own personal views which, try as he might, will reflect in his reportage. Hence, “There’s nothing neutral”, he asserted with all the conviction he could muster.

MNP: Doing it the right way
Number Portability is the key aspect of deregulation in telecommunications. It is to ensure that there is a competition in the marketplace for telecommunications services. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is the ability of a mobile subscriber to retain his/her subscriber number when changing network operators within a country. It is a network feature that allows the subscriber to keep a unique mobile phone number, which is implemented by PTA and agreed upon by all cellular mobile operators. Mobile Number Portability is one of the most important mechanisms to enhance fair competition among different cellular mobile operators and to improve the quality of customer service. In Pakistan, mobile subscribers can broadly be classified into following categories, depending on the satisfaction levels and loyalty of the subscribers towards the cellular mobile operators.
