Media Protest KUJ criticizes sealing of Islamabad Press Club |
| |
Scores of journalists staged a protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC), on the call of Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) to condemn the sealing of the Islamabad Press Club and opening of fire on reporters covering the Lal Masjid standoff. The speakers noted that the act of sealing the Islamabad Press Club and target killing of journalists were aimed at further gagging the press in Pakistan. They vowed that the journalists would continue to struggle to protect the media freedom and rights of journalists. Various civil society members also participated in the protest demonstration with senior journalists and writers. They alleged that keeping journalists confined to the Islamabad Press Club for several hours and sealing the building was tantamount to assailing the press freedom. They also condemned the killing of a cameraman and manhandling of several others. They demanded that the government should hold an impartial inquiry into the issue and punish the culprits.

Major Maqsood also said his son, the deceased Maulana Maqsood, used to write a column titled ‘Naqsh-e-Qadam’ for the Urdu daily Jinnad and had been an active member of the Federal Union of Journalists.

PPP expresses solidarity with journalists |
| |
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has condemned the news of the sealing of the Islamabad Press Club and the Holiday Inn Hotel by the police on July 8. In a statement here Monday, PPP Central Information Secretary Sherry Rehman strongly condemned the latest attack on the media, saying “The Press Club served as a lounge for the journalists, many of whom take it as their second home while many journalists were residing in the five-star hotel next to the Press Club to cover the Lal Masjid crisis. Sealing both the premises is tantamount to rendering the journalists homeless, she added. Criticising the police for thrashing the private television channel reporter, Ms Rehman said was another disgraceful episode of the state’s highhandedness against the media.

Movies
|
| |
“Nevertheless, there are several serious filmmakers and directors who prefer to promote art and culture through cinema and film, and never compromise their dreams. Such people are everywhere in Pakistan, India and other countries and they must be encouraged by the Arts Council and other organisations working for the promotion of healthy cultural values, added another film critic. Still, those committed to the advancement of art and artists ask what is to be done when troubleshooters choose to act as troublemakers in the field of art and culture.”
