Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has closed down two illegal FM Radio Broadcasts in Mardan district of NWFP. “PEMRA, in its recent drive against illegal FM Radio Stations, has closed down two FM radio broadcasts working illegally in Mardan, NWFP,” said PEMRA spokesman here Thursday. “PEMRA has closed down around 175 illegal FM Radio Stations in NWFP and other areas of the country during the last one year as a result of the pragmatic planning and help provided by the respective Provincial Governments,” said the PEMRA spokesman. He said under the drive, a close coordination with the NWFP government and local administration is being maintained and the PEMRA invariably seeks the assistance from provincial authorities for this purpose. PEMRA has terminated transmission of two illegal FM radio broadcasts namely Madrassa Tafheem-ul-Quran Parhoti, Mardan, which was being run by Maulana Faisal Bari. The other radio broadcast namely Madrassa Arabia Islamia Sahwal Dher, Mardan, which was being run by Maulana Hussain Ahmed. This is an ongoing campaign and the pace will be maintained to curb the menace of illegal FM broadcasts, added the PEMRA official. The spokesman further said that PEMRA solicits continued support of the people in addition to the respective provincial governments for stemming the specter of illegal radio stations which are spreading hatred and sectarian strife in the society. PEMRA has also issued clear directives that illegal operations will include legal and punitive action, he said.

  Media Protest
Press under siege | Media needs a united front by Sadaf Arshad
“Pakistan is a state which has been ruled by dictators for more than 30 years. Both India and Pakistan have put their media under siege in one way or the other. Media in these countries has been facing pressures by state and non-state actors. Attack on the people’s right to know and press freedom portrays a very dark picture, where a ray of hope appears when journalists stand united. No pressure can survive long if the media presents a united front.”

Letter to Editor, “Doctors on TV”
Sonia j. Shaikh, “For the past couple of years it has become common place to find doctors who come up on TV channels and advertise their medicines that claim to do miracles. Not only these doctors appear regularly on TV, they have made their place in newspapers. They challenge people and offer a money back guarantee. Their claims for curing ailments are so high and seemingly so true, that no advanced technology can beat them. Thousands of poor and ignorant people waste their money on them especially in rural areas and slums of Pakistan where plunderers trap people as it can be easily done due to lack of medical facilities in those areas. The people who are harmed due to such doctors cannot even complain due to lack of awareness, education and money. The ministry of health should keep a check and balance on these people that grow like weeds all around us. While all the ministers, cabinet, national assembly and parliament have access to the best hospitals in the world, most in the ailing nation have nothing to look up to except God.
