Parliament body okays changes in Pemra Bill

The Reconciliation Committee of Parliament on Wednesday approved unanimously some amendments to the Pemra Amendment Bill. Now this bill will be tabled in parliament for approval. The Committee also heard the stance of Pakistan Broadcasters Association in detail.

PEMRA (Amendments) Bill finalized

A Mediation Committee consisting of members of both the houses of parliament finalised the PEMRA (Amendment) Bill, 2005, on Wednesday. The committee approved the bill unanimously with the amendments that the National Assembly had passed. The bill had been passed by the National Assembly in 2005 but it could not go through the Senate within the prescribed 90 days and the government then referred it to the mediation committee.

Pakistan death 'should be probed'

Media watchdogs have demanded Pakistani officials investigate the death of a TV cameraman killed while covering a tribal clash in southern Pakistan . There are fears Munir Ahmed Sangi, 30, a cameraman for the local Kawish Television Network, may have been shot on purpose during Monday's clash. Four people have been arrested over the shooting in the town of Larkana , police were quoted by news agency AFP.

Journalists protest agencies' highhandedness

Journalists from Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club camp office to protest against the harassment of senior journalists by the officials of intelligence agencies.

Police directed to arrest Sangi's killers

A meeting of senior police officers of the town on Wednesday concentrated on the arrest of the culprits involved in an armed clash between the men of Unnar and Abro tribes that claimed three lives, including that of a press photographer, Munir Sangi.

Media bodies condemn killing of cameraman

International media watch groups on Wednesday strongly condemned the killing this week of a Pakistani cameraman while he was covering a tribal feud in Sindh for local television. Munir Sangi, 30, who worked for Sindhi language Kawish Television Network (KTN), was killed on Monday while covering an armed clash between the Unar and Abro tribes in Larkana, police said.

Cameraman's killing condemned

Journalist unions, politicians and leaders of civil bodies have condemned the killing of TV cameraman Munir Sangi in Larkana. The Hyderabad Union of Journalists and Press Photographers Association staged a demonstration in front of the press club on Wednesday.

Media major tool in fight against poverty: Azeem

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azeem Wednesday said a strong and independent media is a major tool in the fight to win the war against poverty. He was addressing on the occasion of a speech contest on “Role of Media in Poverty Eradication” which was jointly organized here by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the UN Information Centre.

BBC World to encrypt signal from 15th

BBC World would encrypt its digital broadcast television signal on the PanAmSat10 satellite to South Asia on June 15, according to a press statement issued on Wednesday. “As a pan-regional channel, the transition from an unencrypted mode to an encrypted mode is a natural progression for BBC World in South Asia .

‘Don't attack journalists'

An international journalists' rights group on Wednesday censured the lead party in Bangladesh 's coalition government after 25-reporters were injured in an attack by party activists. The Paris-based Reporters With out Borders (RSF) also sought increased security for journalists after Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists attacked a demonstration by media workers in Kushtia.

Subhani Bayunus passes away

Veteran artiste Subhani Bayunus, whose portrayal of Mirza Ghalib in a PTV play catapulted him to fame in the 1960s, died after a long illness on Wednesday. He was 75.

Lawyers' strike today

The Punjab Bar Council on Wednesday issued a call for a strike on Thursday against, what it said, and continued victimization by police. PBC vice-chairman Chaudhry Azhar told Dawn that the police had failed to take action against those who had assaulted lawyers across the province and yet escaped the legal action.
