Governments asked for security to media: SAARC declaration |
| |
SAARC editors’ conferences concluded in New Delhi. In SAARC declaration, Governments are urged to provide security to media community. It is also stressed that hurdles in free movement of media community should be removed. Journalists associations and organizations are asked to enhance links. Declaration has asked SAARC countries to declare defamation law illegal following the example of Sri Lank. The South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC)'s editors' conference here Saturday asked all governments of South Asia to allow freer movement of journalists by issuing multiple entry, long-term visas and to dismantle all border barriers to enable easy exchange of news media products. The conclave also decried the "continuing intimidation" and "attacks" on journalists in the region by "agencies of member states, extra-constitutional authorities, self-appointed cultural custodians, religious and political press gangs, and criminal elements acting in collusion with law enforcement agencies."

Media without message: Article by Ghazi Salahuddin |
| |
On this newspaper's sixteenth birthday, today, I may be forgiven for lapsing, momentarily, into nostalgia. What a memorable experience it was to be a part of the launching of not just another English daily in Pakistan but a newspaper that heralded a technological revolution in the media. And we had a dream team of so many bright young journalists who have since risen to become stars on the firmament of this otherwise not very luminous profession.
