  Salman unhappy with media over economy
  Only Pakistanis and the Pakistani media do not believe in the economic growth dynamo in the country, said Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Salman Shah. “The international research institutes like Merrill Lynch and leading financial institutions, besides world-renowned corporate groups are lauding Pakistan’s growth dynamo and it is only our own people and the local media that do not believe in it,” he said.

  Taliban threaten to kill Italian journalist
  A top Taliban commander threatened on Saturday to kill a kidnapped Italian journalist unless the movement’s arrested spokesmen were freed and a date was set for the withdrawal of Italian troops from Afghanistan.Mullah Dadullah, speaking on telephone from an unknown location, said the militia had set a seven-day deadline for the demands to be met otherwise “we will slaughter this man”. The Italian embassy in Kabul said it wanted proof from whoever was holding the 52-year-old Repubblica correspondent Daniele Mastrogiacomo that he was still alive before it would consider entering into any negotiations.

  CPJ calls for release of journalist
  The committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) for release of Italian journalist. The Committee to Protect Journalists joins colleagues in Afghanistan and around the world in calling for the release of La Repubblica correspondent Daniele Mastrogiacomo, missing since Sunday when he was abducted in southern Afghanistan.

  Geo TV tenders apology
  The full bench of the Lahore High Court comprising Mr Justice Syed Zahid Hussain, Mr Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Mr Justice M A Shahid Siddiqui, Mr Justice Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi and Mr Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, has observed that the court believes in the freedom of press and that the protection of fundamental rights is the constitutional obligation of the judiciary. The court passed these remarks on Friday while hearing the contempt of court matter regarding the programme ‘Gumnaam’ telecast by Geo TV Network. The court observed that it was obligatory on everyone to respect the constitutional institutions especially the judiciary that must be held in high esteem. As such programmes of such a nature should be avoided that negatively impact the dignity and sanctity of the judiciary.

  Journalists to get residential facilities
  Adviser to Chief Minister on Information Salahuddin Haider said the government would provide facilities to journalists under the Wage Board Award. The adviser said the government would provide residential facilities to the journalists and added that a proposal was in the pipeline regarding the allotment of plots.

  National Art Gallery is born with a black spirit
  Almost 30 years after its conception, the National Art Gallery (NAG) is ready to house a collection of the art on permanent basis for public viewing. President Gen Pervez Musharraf is expected to inaugurate the gallery on March 20. Built at a cost of Rs456 million, and over 18,000 square yards, NAG has 13 galleries, a library, 450-seat auditorium, a restoration laboratory, art studios and a children’s section. Works of the present and past artistes would be on display, with a section devoted to portraits, sketches and sculptures of national heroes as “visual history” for the students.

  A reception was held by Lahore Press Club for the Express Editor Sohail Qulnader for his successful return. Senior journalists attended the party. Sohail Qulander expressed gratituide for Journalists efforts for his recovery.
