  Taliban threaten to kill Italian journalist
  A top Taliban commander threatened on Saturday to kill a kidnapped Italian journalist unless the movement’s arrested spokesmen were freed and a date was set for the withdrawal of Italian troops from Afghanistan. Mullah Dadullah, speaking on telephone from an unknown location, said the militia had set a seven-day deadline for the demands to be met otherwise “we will slaughter this man”. The Italian embassy in Kabul said it wanted proof from whoever was holding the 52-year-old Repubblica correspondent Daniele Mastrogiacomo that he was still alive before it would consider entering into any negotiations.

  CNN airing ‘Divide Pakistan’ ads
  A maverick ‘academic’ based in Europe has been buying airtime on CNN for the past two weeks to advertise his book, ‘Divide Pakistan to eliminate terrorism’, according to a report in the Times of India. The 15-second spot, which is aired every day, charges Pakistan with terrorist activities across the world and says the only way to stop this is to split the country into half a dozen separate entities, including Sindhudesh, Jinnahpur, Balochistan and Pakhtunistan, says the report. The author of the book, which is being sold on Amazon.com for $ 15.95, is Syed Jamaluddin, who describes himself in a blog (www.dividepakistan.blogspot.com ) as a British citizen and a chartered accountant with a degree in conflict management.

  Paper price hike by Rs 12/ kg
  In last two months, paper producers have increased the price of different paper products by Rs 12 per kg. According to traders, paper manufacturers have increased the price of different products of paper. Present hike is observed due to Sindh Text board’s decision to purchase uge quantity of paper for books publication.

  No TV, newspapers or phones for CJP
  Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has been cut off from the outside world, and is being denied access to television, newspapers and phones, Air Marshall (r) Asghar Khan said on Sunday after becoming the first person to meet Justice Chaudhry at his house since he was suspended.

  PFUJ condemns action against CJ
  Pakistan federal Union o Journalists demanded of the government to allow media to report versions of restrained Chief Justice Ifthikar Muhammad. “the government must ensure that media is able to report the version of restrained Chief Justice.” Said PFUJ according to press released issued here.

  Media freedom helps promote democratic values: Aziz
  Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that freedom being enjoyed by the media has helped promote and strengthen democratic values in the country. He said this while talking to Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Muhammad Ali Durrani and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Tariq Azeem who called on him at the Prime Minister's House here on Sunday. The prime minister appreciated the role of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in promoting freedom of the press which, he said, was essential for the success of democracy.

  LHC contempt case Bail not granted
  The full bench of the Lahore High Court comprising Mr Justice Syed Zahid Hussain, Mr Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Mr Justice M A Shahid Siddiqui, Mr Justice Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi and Mr Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, has observed that the court believes in the freedom of press and that the protection of fundamental rights is the constitutional obligation of the judiciary. The court passed these remarks on Friday while hearing the contempt of court matter regarding the programme ‘Gumnaam’ telecast by Geo TV Network. The court observed that it was obligatory on everyone to respect the constitutional institutions especially the judiciary that must be held in high esteem. As such programmes of such a nature should be avoided that negatively impact the dignity and sanctity of the judiciary.

  Contempt of court hearing against Geo TV today
  A Lahore High Court full bench today (Monday) will take up contempt of court proceedings against Geo TV for telecasting a programme, which was seen an attempt to lower the esteem of the judiciary.

  New national art gallery to show Pakistan’s ‘moderate’ face
  Project cost estimated at Rs 456 million. President Musharraf to inaugurate the gallery in late March. The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) is set to open a new national art gallery here this month with the aim of promoting a more progressive image of the country. "We want to show the world what Pakistan is actually like and that we are a modern and a forward-thinking nation," said PNCA Visual Director Musarrat Nahid Imam, adding that curators had been given complete freedom from any government censorship.

  Official hails media
  Outgoing Chief Secretary NWFP Ejaz Ahmed Quershi Sunday eulogized media, saying it helped him in addressing grievance of the poor. He said, “journalists are the ears and eyes of the society and NWFP media effectively plays this role.”

  Aroosa Alam’s clarification
  Senior Vice President Rawalpindi Islamabad Press Club Aroosa Alam has rejected false and fabricated news about her marriage with some Indian politician from East Punjab. She ruled out possibility commenting that she even can’t think about such relationship with any non Muslim. She prayed for direction for those who levelled such allegations.

  Dawn staffers grieved
  Shaikh Rashid Mohammad, elder brother of three Dawn staffers – Shaikh Hanif Mohammad, Shaikh Mohammad Suleman and Shaikh Nazir Ahmed – died of a heart attack on Saturday night and was buried in the Sakhi Hassan graveyard on Sunday. He was 63. The soyem will be held on Tuesday at his residence: C-153, Block A, North Nazimabad (near Healthcare Centre).
