Radio KU’s FM radio station still a dream |
| |
The FM radio station project of the University of Karachi, a brainchild of the Department of Mass Communication, is not likely to see much progress any time soon, it emerged on Thursday.
While the station obtained a licence in 2006, it has not yet gone on air. The Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority has served a notice on the KU, warning it to complete the project soon or lose the licence.
What has been done by the administration is that they have asked Pemra for time till January 2008, saying that the building that was supposed to have been completed by now is still under construction. |

Music CD shops in Karak attacked |
| |
A man was injured and several CD and music shops were damaged in two explosions here on Thursday.
Officials said a third bomb planted outside a music shop was defused. It is for the first time that CD and music shops have been targeted in the Karak town.
The first blast took place in the Mubarik Shah CD centre early in the morning, damaging adjacent shops and injuring the owner of a hair-cutting salon, Dilfaraz, who was opening his shop at the time.

Owners of CD shops wind up business |
| |
More than 100 owners of CD shops, who were asked by local Taliban to wind up their business, submitted an undertaking in the city police station on Thursday to voluntarily go for alternative trades.
The local Taliban, involved in blowing up CD shops for the past one year in Kohat, had warned the owners of CD shops to close down what they called their un-Islamic business by October 15. The threat came with a warning that not only would their shops be destroyed but they themselves could be killed if they did not meet the deadline.

Attack on CD shops |
| |
The spread of the attacks on the 'un-Islamic' businesses from the interior areas of NWFP to the provincial capital of Peshawar is disconcerting and should worry the authorities. A blast on Oct 10 in a major CD market in the city killed one person and left at least 25 people injured. While the inability to fight these attacks on CD shops and barbers in the province by extremists can be linked to the recent political paralysis, there really is no excuse available to the law-enforcement agencies in the case of the Peshawar blast. Given the trend of attacks, and the choice of targets, there ought to have been a lot more security in place, especially around major CD markets in the provincial capital.
