Free the press |
| |
THE Council of Pakistani Newspaper Editors has described the government’s treatment of the press. The Council’s press statement demanded that the President and the Information Ministry should both come forward and assure the journalist community that the rumored Press And Publication Regulatory Authority does not come into being. Earlier, the Information Minister had distanced himself from the PAPRA proposal when a draft of the proposed bill had attracted fire in the national press. But that is not enough. In the esoteric hierarchy of the present political setup, a decision in not final until it comes from the President (though even that has been known to change according to his will). |
