  TV channels off air for airing protest
  Two private TV channels remained off air for some time on Monday after getting a warning from the government's media regularity authority for showing pictures of police baton-charge on protesting lawyers in Lahore against the suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. It was the Aaj TV which first showed the footage of police chasing and beating the protesting lawyers on the streets of Lahore at around 1pm. The TV channel showed senior Supreme Court lawyer Sardar Latif Khosa with a bleeding head being taken by colleagues for medical treatment.

  Channels telecasting CJ issues suspended for few minutes
  The transmission of some electronic news channels wee suspended here on Monday when they were telecasting the coverage of developments related to suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad. The suspension took place at the time when these news channels telecast the protest of lawyer community throughout the country in afternoon of Monday.

  LHC moved to cancel licences of private TV channels
  Justice Hamid Ali Shah of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday sought reply from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) over the operations of two private television channels. The judge directed the Pemra to submit a report whether or not two of the private television channels were telecasting their transmission in accordance with the rules and regulations. The court issued this direction while taking up a petition filed by a local lawyer Muhammad Arshad and also referred the petition to the chief justice of the LHC to constitute a larger bench for further hearing of the petition.

  APNS-CPNE team barred from meeting suspended CJ
  A delegation comprising media tycoons and newspapers editors Monday was refused permission to visit the “non-functional” Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. The office bearers of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) were stopped near the Ministers’ Enclave where the police had barricaded the road leading to the Judges Colony. Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, APNS President and other office bearers wanted to meet the ‘non-functional’ Chief Justice of Pakistan in the wake of the current crisis.

  Newspaper bosses barred from meeting CJ
  The executive committee members of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) Monday went to the residence of the suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to meet him and have knowledge of his stance on the presidential reference; however, the security officials forcibly halted them. When the APNS executive committee members reached in front of the Balochistan House, some 500 yards from the CJ residence, a large contingent of police blocked their way. A magistrate told the newspapers' owners that they could not meet the CJ. He asked for a list of their names, saying if the CJ wanted to see them they would be allowed to proceed.

  Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Punjab chapter has condemned the use of “brute force” on a peaceful rally of lawyers in Lahore Monday. Punjab chapter has announced that journalists will observe black day today on March 13, 2007.

  PFUJ condemns lawyer beating
  The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condemned the use of “brute force” on a peaceful rally of lawyers in Lahore Monday. In a statement, PFUJ demanded action against police officers responsible for injuring a number of lawyers. The PFUJ also condemned the government’s “attempt” to prevent the press from meeting Justice Chaudhry and termed it “an attack on the freedom of the press”. “If the government has a right to issue statements, its ministers and chief ministers are allowed to address press conferences then Justice Chaudhry must be allowed to speak out,” the statement said.

  CNN denies ‘book ad’
  CNN International has said that a number of media outlets and blog sites had inaccurately reported that advertising airtime had been purchased on CNN International by the author of the book “Divide Pakistan to Eliminate Terrorism”. Some local cable operators may have accepted the advert to run in their own airtime, a CNN statement said, adding that CNN International has for many years had in place strict and broad guidelines in relation to political and advocacy advertising on its international services, in respect to the diverse and often strict advertising laws in the many countries in which it operates. A Times of India report said that a Europe-based maverick ‘academic’ has been buying airtime on CNN for the past two weeks to advertise his book.

  High Court accepts TV channel’s apology
  A full bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday accepted an unconditional apology tendered by the Geo TV Network management and withdrew contempt notices served on them. The proceedings had been initiated against the channel for telecasting a programme in which a man portrayed as a high court official was shown taking bribe. The court termed the programme an attempt at lowering the dignity of the judiciary.

  Court clerk faces action LHC accepts Geo apology
  A full bench of the Lahore High Court has accepted unconditional apology of Geo TV Network and discharged the contempt proceedings against the channel which were initiated following a segment of television programme "Gumnam" in which an LHC clerk was shown receiving bribe. The bench observed that the judiciary did not bar the media from unearthing the evils of society but the mediamen should remain careful while reporting the affairs of judiciary and verify the facts before publishing or telecasting a report on court affairs.

  The role of journalism is very important in bridging the gap between different cultures and especially the Islamic and Western world, commented a senior British journalist and training consultant, Nicolas Morrison, on the first day of a 3-day workshop titled ‘A mission to explain: The role of journalism in promoting inter-cultural understanding’ held at the office of British Council on Monday.

  Science and Technology channel soon says Durrani
  Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani has said that PTV and PBC will begin new bulletins on science and technology. He said government will soon launch a television channel on science and technology to disseminate information on the subject. He was addressing a Science workshop.

  Artists want ‘peaceful’ venue for display of artwork
  A simmering controversy between a group of senior artists and Pakistan National Council of the arts (PNCA) is threatening to sour the opening of new building of national Art Gallery this month. The art venue is said to be in a row with PNCA which has reserved the auditorium located adjacent to gallery for performing art. Artists believe this move could pose a serious threat to priceless pieces of art to be displayed at the gallery, sources say. They point out that crowds thronging for performing art events go unruly at times are known to have damaged public property in past.

  Iftikhar’s profile restored as CJP on SC website
  The profile of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as the chief justice of Pakistan has been restored on the Supreme Court website, while official sources claimed that Chaudhry’s profile disappeared “due to technical problem”. On Saturday, a day after the filing of a reference against Chaudhry and his subsequent suspension by the Supreme Judicial Council, his profile as the chief justice was removed from official SC website. The profile was restored after media reports triggered criticism of the action.

  Big TV in Clifton park
  A big TV screen is being installed in premises of Bagh Ibn-i-Qasim to facilitate visitors to watch World Cup matches. The world cup is starting today (March 13). An official assisting in the park’s upkeep said the screen was being installed on the directives of the Sindh Governor.
