Media in Court SC moved against restrictions on journalists |
| |
A constitutional petition was filed in the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday seeking permission for use of mobile phones and media cameras inside the court. Engineer Jamil Malik, on behalf of the Communist Party of Pakistan, filed the petition under Article 184(3) of the Constitution. The petition contends that restriction on use of mobile phones and cameras of media people is a violation of Article 19 of the Constitution, which envisages freedom of speech, expression and press. The petitioner has challenged a recent advisory issued by the SC asking media people to deposit their mobile phones and cameras at the court gates. He maintains that any such restriction can only be imposed for the ‘glory of Islam’ or security of Pakistan.

The aim of workshop is to educate the journalists regarding the coverage of different trends in the election process and to enrich journalists understanding of the same. Letter to editor “Books & Authors” |
| |
Mansoorul Haq Solangi writes about the Dawn’s weekly section “Books & Authors” “I am amazed to see that the Books and Authors, which is being published regularly on Sundays for the last many years, carries reviews of the books mostly foreign-published. There is hardly any representation of books printed in local market, especially in regional languages. If this is not on account of expressed policy of the management or editorial board, and I hope it would not be so, then efforts are required to provide space to books published locally so that the readership may not be deprived of quality material available and also the local authors and writers did not get the impression of some sort of prejudice and discrimination.”

Arts Naeem Tahir invites artists to reject cynicism and enjoy the National Art Gallery |
| |
Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) Director General Naeem Tahir is at the centre of a controversy involving not one, but a host of concerns that have created an unnatural divide between the visual and performing artists of Pakistan -- that too when the majestic National Art Gallery is almost ready for inauguration. In an exclusive interview with 'The News' here on Thursday, this is how Naeem Tahir responded to some of the irritants that have come to be associated with the National Art Gallery, and also with his management style, to some extent. The News: What was the issue about renaming of the National Art Gallery as the Pakistan Centre of Creative Arts? Naeem Tahir: I am saddened over the manner in which public attention has been diverted to a non-issue. The National Art Gallery remains as it is. It was never renamed so the question of the National Art Gallery getting its name back does not arise. The media has sensationalized the issue to capture headlines.
