Attack on Media Intimidation Speaker bans entry of Hamid Mir in NA |
| |
The National Assembly speaker has banned the entry of journalist Hamid Mir in the press gallery and he was not allowed to render his professional obligations “The entry of Hamid Mir was banned under the rules of procedure of the National Assembly,” Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain replied to a PML-N legislator on Tuesday. PML-N lawmaker Khwaja Saad Rafique on a point of order requested the speaker to allow entry of Hamid Mir to press gallery so that he could render his professional obligations. However, the speaker told him that Mir’s entry was banned under rules of procedure of the National Assembly.
Khwaja Saad, however, said that banning the entry of Hamid Mir was against the freedom of press. PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also requested the speaker to allow the entry of Hamid Mir. However, the speaker said that Hamid Mir’s entry was banned according the rules and procedures of the National Assembly. Hamid Mir, who hosts popular talk show “Capital Talk” on Geo TV was banned by the NA speaker to enter the press gallery after a scuffle with alleged non-journalists in the gallery, following the mediapersons’ walkout from the gallery as a mark of protest against the promulgation of recently amended Pemra ordinance. The journalist community staged a strong protest against the promulgation of Pemra ordinance the other day in the press gallery of the Parliament House and boycotted the proceeding of the National Assembly. |

Media in Courts Journalist apologizes to apex court |
| |
The Supreme Court on Tuesday summoned a journalist and warned him for publishing a news item suggesting initiation of references by the government against four senior judges who were part of the 13-member larger bench hearing the petition of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, and warned him to be careful in future. In its order, the Supreme Court said: “Muhammad Saleh Zaafir, editor special reporting, of the daily ‘Jang’ and ‘The News’, has entered appearance on our call, in connection with the news items appearing in the Rawalpindi edition of the daily ‘Jang’ and daily ‘The News’ of June 11, 2007, regarding some references being made against four senior judges of this court who, presumably also happen to be members of this bench.” The news item, the order said, appeared to be open to further serious exception because it had been published, more than boldly, on the front pages of the two newspapers on the day when the bench was expected to announce its decision on the maintainability of petitions filed in this court questioning the presidential reference against the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

Copy Rights The One Commandant by Fasi Zaka |
| |
“No one is going to pay hundreds of dollars for software in Pakistan, even if they wanted to. But the problem here is of course patents, which make software firms temporary monopolies. Piracy is just one of the responses of the market system to the cartel like behaviour of the new modern day guilds of software associations who have used intellectual property rights as an excuse not to rationalise the price points to realistic levels. The fact that they won't charge special prices in the third world (like book publishers do), is a failure of the market system which is supposed to be price sensitive. For all our flaws in the third world, maybe this is one we just don't have to be that apologetic for.”
