Attack on Media Restriction CNN banned from visiting Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa |
| |
The government on Thursday arranged a visit for journalists to Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, but did not allow reporters from the Cable News Network (CNN), a US-based news television network, to participate. Daily Times learnt that the government had some complaints regarding CNN’s reporting of the army’s operation and the network was not allowed to visit the scene along with other local and foreign media teams after completion of the operation. When asked about his point of view regarding CNN being banned from reporting onsite at the Lal Masjid, CNN Bureau Chief in Pakistan Mohsin Naqvi told Daily Times by e-mail that, “The actions by Pakistan’s government are regrettable. We remain committed to reporting from Pakistan.”

Media Protest Press under siege | Silencing the media by Sadaf Arshad |
| |
“In military operations worldwide, the media is not given any hope of access to the particular zone where the operation is being carried out. In our case, the media oscillated between hope and disappointment. The media was assured to be taken inside Lal Masjid, but later the government denied any possibility under the pretext that the operation was still going on. Now that it has finally ended, we have our doubts about the technicalities and authenticity of this operation. Maybe another operation was carried out to remove bodies to prevent the media from reporting on them. The culture of secrecy always gives birth to suspicious. It is a sign that the government is speedily losing its credibility, which cannot be supported through press conferences and statements.”

‘Millions to be spent on NWFP’s media infrastructure’ |
| |
The government believes in bringing the Pakistani media at par with international standards and 52 media development projects are being launched in the year 2007-08 with a record allocation of Rs 6 billion. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani said this while talking to NWFP Minister for Information and Public Relations Asif Iqbal Daudzai, who called on him at the office on Wednesday. “Rs 148 million have been earmarked for the NWFP media development projects, which demonstrates the government’s resolve to take all the federating units along in the development process,” Durrani told Daudzai. The federal minister said two Re-Broadcast Stations (RBS) of the PTV had been set up in Laram Top and Bajaur Agency, which would be inaugurated in September this year. The Laram would cost Rs 27 million and would serve around 450,000 people, while the Bajaur Agency RBS had been established at a cost of Rs 34 million and would cover 75,000 households, he added. He said the projects would carry the modern age benefits to the distant regions and would bring affordable entertainment at peoples’ doorsteps. He said the Islamabad Media University (IMU) would be launched in the next two months at a cost of Rs 500 million, followed by setting up of its provincial campuses, including the Peshawar campus, in the second phase.
