Critique on Media Letter to Editor, “Tailored reality on TV” |
| |
S Faiyazuddin Ahmad, “I recently returned from Pakistan after enjoying a rather long holiday, visiting friends and cities I had not seen for many years. I also had the opportunity to travel by road, rail and air across the country. Since my return, I have become rather home sick and try to refresh my memories of Pakistan by watching the numerous Pakistani TV channels available here in the United Kingdom. I must say that I cannot find the Pakistan I had visited in programmes on Pakistani TV channels. The soaps and dramas show the lives of the elite class, with their luxurious homes and lavish lifestyles. This may be another way of depicting a “soft” image of Pakistan, one compatible with “enlightened moderation”. Further, they also put for the idea that perhaps every educated urban Pakistani is obsessed with the Western lifestyle. The fact is that a tiny percentage of the population embraces the Western lifestyle. A recent news-item spoke of reform at Pakistan Television (PTV), restoring its lost glory by producing programmes that are true to the lives of ordinary Pakistanis. I have yet to see such a change.”

Telecommunication Wireless phone internet facility in Sept: PTA |
| |
People across the country will have access in September to new high speed wireless telephone and internet facility. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Shahzada Alam Malik told journalists on Sunday that broadband providers would launch the service called Worldwide Inter-operability for Microwave Access (WiMax). "This service will be a revolutionary step forward for people who will have access to telephone and internet with a single connection without the costly need of dispatching technicians or physically running wires," the PTA head said. The WiMAX was designed to provide broadband multimedia data over wireless channels in packet-based environment, with range greatly surpassing that is currently available with other wireless broadband technologies. He said that the infrastructure developed for Wimax service in Pakistan is the biggest in the world. Major players in the industry were throwing their weight behind mobile WiMax in a way they had not with the fixed version, he said. The PTA chairman said the Wireless Local Loop (WLL) license holders in 3.5 GHz frequency have now established their networks using WiMax technology after issuance of commencement certificates by the Authority. |

The News Editorial, “Regulating mobile phone services” |
| |
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has finally launched a crackdown against franchises of cellular companies selling new connections without meeting regulatory requirements. Finally, the PTA is showing its teeth by warning errant mobile phone franchises that if they do not verify the papers of the phone applicants, it could lead to complete sealing of their businesses. This is good news for most as the misuse of mobile phones has become very common over the past couple of years. The PTA campaign has been launched in all five zones, which include Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar and Multan, and franchises in all these areas have been going through surprise checks. This newspaper has reported that according to a rough estimate, more than three million subscribers have submitted fake personal details to their respective service providers at the time of acquiring connection. This is a very high number and is seen as a serious security threat as these phones can be used for acts or terror as well. It may be recalled that the country has witnessed a phenomenal jump in cellular subscriber base during the last three years, on increased competition and declining tariff.
