  Judicial commission set up for Marriot hotel hostility against media men
  Government has set up judicial inquiry commission to probe the incident of Police baton charge against journalists outside Marriot Hotel held on 26th January. Journalists were present for the coverage of the incident of suicidal attack on hotel. Commission will be headed by District and Session Judge Islamabad. Report will be presented in 30 days. Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights has issued notification. Commission will analyze who was wrong? Police action was justifiable or not?

  PEMRA meeting: ‘Govt will continue its freedom of expression policy’
  The government will continue to maintain its policy of freedom of expression, said President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday. “The government will continue to pursue its policy of providing electronic and print media the maximum freedom,” he said, while presiding over a meeting of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) at the President’s House. However, he said, the media should “discharge its responsibilities keeping in view the supreme national interest”. The president said that a large number of private TV channels were operating in the country due to the liberal media policy of the government, adding that, “This policy will be maintained.” “The government has never imposed restrictions on the media despite the fact that it is targeted by the media,” he said. He said that the media had a vital role in promoting democratic norms in the country, adding that media should perform its obligations in a “befitting manner”. “The rules introduced by PEMRA should be implemented, as the authority has enhanced the country’s image at the international level,” he said.

  Free electronic media in interest of country: Musharraf
  President Gen Pervez Musharraf said on Tuesday free electronic media was in the larger interest of the country and democracy and national creditability had been given a boost through it. He was chairing PEMRA meeting at camp office in Rawalpindi.

  Journalist protest continues as govt fails to recover Qalandar
  Local journalists observed hunger strike for eighth consecutive day at the Press Club here Tuesday in protest against the government failure to recover Sohail Qalandar and his friend Niaz Muhammad who had been kidnapped 43 days ago. Those who observed hunger strike included Rahimullah Yousafzai, Faizur Rehman, Fayyaz Aziz, Iftikhar Ali, Shahid Hamid, Farzana Ali and Muhammad Qasim while dozens of journalists and leaders of different political parties participated in the hunger strike camp.

  Qalandar case: Ban on tribal transport to FATA demanded
  A protest rally in Peshawar held to condemn the missing of Sohail Qalandar. Demonstration demanded that ban should be imposed on tribal transport to FATA to force them to release missing journalist. Protestors threatened if ban not imposed, they would burn the transport vehicles.

  Journalist Hunger strike in Islamabad for Qalanader
  Journalists observed hunger strike in Islamabad to denounce government’s inefficiency over the missing of the Express Peshawar editor Sohail Qalander. Journalists vowed to continue struggle till recovery. If senior journalists suffer, Governor, Chief Minister of NWFP and Interior Minister would be responsible. Journalists decided to continue hunger strike for today. PML-N leader Pir Sabir Shah said that government had no control over FATA.

  National Art gallery building completed
  Construction of National Art Gallery Building has been completed. President Gen Pervez Musharraf is expected to inaugurate the building in mid of March. Building is situated on Jinnah Avenue with 14 galleries, admin block, and an auditorium of 450 seats capacity.

  Lone Pak Satellite comes of age
  The country’s only satellite world reach the point of break even by the end of the current year, PAKSAT international CEO Usman Bajwa told ‘The News’ Tuesday. After over four years of anonymity since it launch in on December 20, 2002 the Pakistan owned satellite is now fast attracting traffic. Satellite HGS-3 acquired from Hughes Global Services revolves around its orbit at 38 degree slot with 0-degree inclination, attracted enormous negative publicity at launch for a brief down time before the national media dumped it in the space.
