Durrani says no need to impose emergency in country | SJC, not govt, had barred media from covering the case |
| |
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani Tuesday said the decision to sent reference against suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was not taken by President General Pervez Musharraf, but by the government. Information Minister Muhammad Ali Khan Durrani said the SJC had issued an advice to television channels not to report the sub judice presidential reference, as it would have adverse effects on the judiciary. Answering a question about the restriction on lawyers, journalists and politicians to meet the suspended CJP, he said they should have had in their mind that they were going to meet a judge and not a political figure. Meanwhile, Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Tuesday met at the Aiwan-e-Sadr Monday to discuss matters related to the current constitutional crisis in the country. According to sources, the two leaders discussed the situation in the wake of presidential reference against the suspended CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Dawn ad ban issue raised in assembly |
| |
Balochistan Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mir Abdur Rehman Jamali and opposition members in the provincial assembly have demanded that the federal government should restore advertisements to Dawn. They said curtailing the newspaper’s advertisements was against the principle of freedom of the press. Opposition member Jan Mohammad Buledi raised the issue on Tuesday on a point of order, saying that the newspaper was being punished for its independent editorial policy and coverage of events in Balochistan. He said the people of Balochistan praised Dawn for pinpointing excesses and exposing the government’s policy of oppression against innocent people.

Fm listening | Is two better than one? |
| |
It is said two are better than one. Every day we come across many situations where we want someone to be with us. A companion who could make us feel comfortable and supports us in tackling various situations. I don’t necessarily mean a boyfriend or a girlfriend but rather anyone who could serve as a support system.

Ahmad Ali Khan — giant of journalism |
| |
Mr Ahmad Ali Khan’s death here on Tuesday removes from the scene one of the giants of Pakistan’s English journalism. With Dawn, whose editor he was for 28 years, his association began before partition in Delhi in 1946 with Mr Altaf Husain as editor, and ended in Karachi in 2004. In between he served as editor of The Pakistan Times, but returned to Dawn in 1962. Thus on the whole he was with Dawn for 42 years, 28 of them as editor, longer than any other editor. His journalistic career spanned over five decades, beginning in 1945 with Tarjuman, published in Bhopal, his hometown, where he was born in 1924.

The end of an era |
| |
AN era in Pakistan’s journalism came to an end when Dawn’s legendary editor, Ahmad Ali Khan, died in Karachi on Tuesday morning after a protracted illness. He took over as Dawn’s editor in 1973 when the paper was facing virtual closure, and the country had still not come out of the trauma of the separation of East Pakistan. Dawn was reduced to six pages, with the paper finding it difficult to pay salaries to its staff. By the time he quit as Chief Editor 27 yeas later, Dawn was in a financially sound position — an asset that helped him stand pressures from despotic regimes. In salvaging Dawn, Mr Ahmad Ali Khan, known to his colleagues and admirers as Khan Saab, proved himself a tenacious fighter not only for Dawn but for all that the Quaid stood for.
