A daily review of media coverage of media and communications issues
‘Encouraging the trend of ‘localised media', Adnan Rehmat
| |
|
From the very beginning, the government has had a firm control over the electronic media in Pakistan. This has led to a communication gap between the informed and the ignorant sections of society. To meet these challenges and to lessen the general accessibility of the electronic sector for the masses, the field of electronic media was opened up to the private sector for the first time in the history of Pakistan in April 2002. However, with this boon in the industry of electronic media came in a blink of eye a number of private TV and radio channels in the country. Yet private TV channels to some extent satisfied the need for which they were established having a professional approach as compared to private radio stations like the FM channels. |

Letters to Editor
Celebrating TV |
|
Sir: Since the growth of TV channels, one would have thought the competition would induce all of them, or at least the better ones, to introduce new ideas, better production, better presenters and so on. But that has not happened and it doesn't look like it is about to happen. Take for instance the soaps these channels play. There was a time when Pakistan Television produced some great soaps, which were in great demand in India also. Indeed, some of our old serials are still very popular there. Then there was a mushroom growth of Indian channels and we began to copy their ordinary soaps with the saas-bahi themes. |

Pakistani film industry |
|
Many Pakistani actors, producers and distributors support the showing of Indian films, saying that this is exactly the boost the local industry needs to revive itself and improve the quality of its productions. There is also much talk about joint productions between India and Pakistan, which will also benefit local cinema and talent. This will give a boost to the local industry's confidence and ability to make quality films. |
