Press freedom result of workers sacrifices: Durrani |

Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani said on Thursday that journalists and newspaper workers had given many sacrifices for the freedom of press in Pakistan. “This liberty has not been given by any ruler or government,” he said while addressing a ceremony organised by All Pakistan Hawkers Federation here at a local hotel. Durrani said the journalist community has always been bold in its criticism of government. “But politicians sometimes hesitate to speak even against a Station House Officer (SHO),” he added. |

Preliminary report into harassment case submitted |
| |
Various secret agencies have sent their preliminary reports to the President, Prime Minister and other concerned quarters regarding the incident pertaining to the reported harassment of Kamran Rehmat, Editor of The News, Islamabad. The editor’s car was chased down from Islamabad Highway right to his residence doorstep in G-10/1 in the wee hours of Wednesday. A spokesman of the Ministry of Information in a statement Thursday said the government has taken strong notice of the matter. He said the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani was taking personal interest by pursuing the case and has discussed the matter with Federal Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao and other concerned officials.

SHC issues notice to PEMRA |
| |
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday issued notices to Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, All Pakistan Cable Operators Association, Karachi Cable Operators Association and World Call Telecom on Rs100 million lawsuit for injunction against infringement and violation of copyrights. Box Office, a distributor of cinematographic films in Pakistan, alleged that the defendants infringed its legal right by showing its cinematographic films Casino Royal (New 007) and Umrao Jan through cable network. It was submitted that media is being exploited by defendants to promote piracy under garb of license issued by PEMRA and alleged that defendants are abetting each other for the continuance of illegal act.

Journalists protest against PPP |
| |
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has protested against the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) for occupying over the National Press Club building here, as the BBC reported. President PFUJ Pervaiz Shaukat, CR Shamsi, Fauzia Shahid and other headed the protest which was staged against the occupation on the National Press Club building by the PPP Deputy Secretary Information Sajjad Bukhari. The participants of the protest raised slogans against the unlawful occupation and called the PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto for intervene into the matter so that journalists’ community could get its due justice.

Cable operators meet Mushahid |
| |
A delegation of the Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (CAP) met with a senior leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and informed him of their ordeal regarding the imposition of a new tax. In a statement issued Thursday, the CAP said that it had met PML-Q's secretary general Mushahid Hussain and informed him of the federal excise duty (FED), which was implemented by the Central Board of Revenue, demanding Rs 10 from the cable operators for each client. The delegation informed Hussain that their customers were refusing to pay the new tax introduced in the last budget.
