'Media inflamed Karachi situation'
In the hurriedly-called meeting of coalition MPs, President Pervez Musharraf Tuesday lashed out at the media for sustaining the current pro-Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry’s campaign and assured the members he would handle it appropriately. He said the media has hyped it and steps would be taken to bring the media to senses. He cited the example of Justice Iftikhar’s Lahore meeting. “Not more than 25,000 people were present there but the media projected it in terms of lakhs,” he said. Similarly, the president said, the media inflamed an explosive situation in Karachi on Saturday and Sunday by highly exaggerating the events there.

Musharraf has given unprecedented freedom to media: ministry spokesman
A Spokesman of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said Tuesday that the media in Pakistan has unprecedented freedom and the government is doing everything possible to further promote this freedom. "Those who are endeavoring to find faults with regard to Pakistan's record of press freedom, should not keep their eyes shut to the reality of a rejuvenated press in Pakistan which has been due to Government encouragement and design", he said. The spokesman was commenting on reports in a section of the press that quoted a US agency as claiming that press freedom in Pakistan was sliding downwards. He said since President Musharraf took over media had been given unprecedented freedom. President Musharraf, while being head of the government before the elections of 2002, introduced the Freedom of Information Law, the Press Council Law and PEMRA Law that saw the proliferation of TV and Radio channels in the private sector for the first time in Pakistan, the spokesman said. Regarding the alleged death of 110 journalists in Pakistan during 2006, the spokesman pointed out that the figure was highly exaggerated and incorrect.
