Media Regulation Aaj, Dawn back conditionally |
| |
The government allowed Aaj TV and Dawn News to go on air on Thursday, with certain conditions. However, sources said Aaj TV was allowed back on the condition that two of its talk shows - “Live With Talat” and “Bolta Pakistan” - would not be run. Aaj TV Director News Talat Hussain confirmed that the channel was back on air. “Any understanding between the employer and the government that will infringe on our editorial independence is unacceptable,” he said. “We will either resist or resign from our jobs,” he said. |

Journalists protest media curbs in Pakistan |
| |
PESHAWAR/LAHORE/ ISLAMABAD: Journalists across the world observed a “Global Action Day” on Thursday to condemn curbs on the media following the imposition of emergency rule in Pakistan. The day was observed on a call of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). According to a PFUJ press release, memorandums were submitted to Pakistani embassies on behalf of IFJ affiliates in 115 countries. On the PFUJ’s call, the Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) also held a protest at the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club against the media curbs. Raza condemned amendments to the PEMRA ordinance that imposed curbs on the electronic media. The South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) Pakistan chapter expressed solidarity with journalists against the sanctions on the media imposed after the proclamation of emergency in the country, according to a press release. Safma rejects code of conduct |

Safma seminar condemns emergency, media curbs
The South Asia Free Media Association (Safma) has condemned the curbs imposed on the media and termed the new ‘code of conduct’ issued by the government as ‘ridiculous’. Participants of a meeting held by the NWFP chapter of Safma at the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday condemned the blocking of electronic news channels and said access to information was a right of the people. They said President Pervez Musharraf, who used to claim that he had given freedom to the media, was the one who had snatched it, imposed a ban on the media and issued a code of conduct under the amended Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority Ordinance. Safma vice-president Abdullah Jan said information was public property and media should be free to inform the public. He criticised the code of conduct for the media. “It is ridiculous that if any participant says something against government policies during a talk show on a TV channel, the anchor and the channel will be held responsible,” he said. The association’s senior vice-president Ismail Khan said there should be a code of conduct but banning Pakistani news channels for allegedly spreading ‘vulgarity’ seemed absurd as foreign entertainment channels were still on air.

The Gujranwala Union of Journalists on Thursday organised a hunger strike camp at the press club, demanding that the government end ban on private television channels and remove restrictions on the print media. Speaking on the occasion, union leaders criticised the government for silencing the media under the emergency. They said they would come on roads if the ban on private television channels and restrictions on the print media were not lifted immediately. Those present at the camp were wearing black armbands. They condemned Islami Jamiat Talaba for manhandling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan during an anti-government rally at the Punjab University’s New Campus on Wednesday and later handing him to police.

Press under siege | For our own good by Sadaf Arshad |
| |
“Their demand for independent news channels to be watched makes sense but not in the circumstances that we are living in. One wonders through, if banning access to information will serve the purpose of the government when other modes for getting information are available. People are saying that the president should consider his friend, President Bush’s advice to end the emergency. They believe the US cannot support violation of human rights. And if it does, many questions would be raised regarding its double standards. People should try to understand that government’s acts in the recent past show its strong urge to realize a better society. Long live the government’s efforts to manage press freedom, long live the affected TV channels.” |

Letter to Editor, “Media’s role” |
| |
Muhammad Mahtab Bashir, “Media plays an important and constructive role in holding free and fair elections. A free press always plays an important role in a democratic society. The media, especially the electronic media, has been accused of sensationalising the present scenario. The media crossed its limits at times. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press can be ensured in our society through elected representatives.”
