CPNE slates govt for stopping Dawn ads |
| |
The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors has condemned the federal government move of stopping government advertisements to ‘Dawn’ and rejected pressure tactics to seek changes in newspapers’ editorial policies. In an emergency session on Tuesday, a standing committee of the CPNE said it was against the use of advertisement as a lever against a newspaper. The members of the committee said such moves – unsuccessful in the past – would continue to fail because of unity among print media representative bodies like the CPNE and the All Pakistan Newspapers Society.

| |
The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) Tuesday strongly condemned the federal government move to stop advertisement to a member daily terming it a draconian measure of the government. The CPNE standing committee held an emergency session here Tuesday. The committee, reposing full confidence in the leadership of CPNE President Syed Fasih Iqbal and General Secretary Wamiq Zuberi, urged them to exercise maximum caution in dialogue with the federal government on the subject of press freedom and other matters relating to the print media and of primary concern to the CPNE.

SAFMA report a slap on govt’s face’ |
| |
Pakistan People’s Party (PPPP) Information Secretary Sherry Rehman called a recent report by the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) “a slap on the government’s face” that contradicted its claims of allowing freedom of expression. Rehman said journalists faced a threat from secret agencies backed by the government. “The brutal treatment meted out to ‘unfriendly journalists’ is a violation of basic human rights and it exposes the government’s lies about media protection and freedom,” she said. “Pakistan lost four journalists last year, and their murders still remain a mystery.”

Media enjoy freedom: Elahi |
| |
Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said the government has given unprecedented freedom to media in the country. He was addressing the book launching ceremony of Mahmood Sham's writings titled "Robaro", One-to-One, and "Zalzla-ke-Dhool' here Tuesday. The CM said a large number of new channels have launched their transmission in Pakistan by benefiting from free media policy of the government. The governments in the past, despite making tall claims about democracy, could not set up any such example, he added. He said the government was following principles of tolerance and cooperation and was working to strengthen national institutions. He said the government was implementing its policies with sheer commitment and good intentions and trying to remove weaknesses and bottlenecks in the way of progress. He said a lot of progress has been made in the fields of health, education and all other sectors. The spirit our nation demonstrated during the earthquake was the best example of patriotism, he added.
