Telecommunications PTA, CPLC anti-cell phone theft system |
| |
Telecom authorities feel that the lack of proper training among policemen, who register complaints against cell phone snatching in the city, has seriously impaired the success of the campaign against such crimes. In a recent report, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has said that a system designed jointly by the telecom regulator and the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) to check cell phone snatching through IMEI facility (international mobile equipment identity) has met with limited success. But the PTA claims that the fault lies not with the system but the manner in which it is being implemented. “There is a need to train the police helpline 15 in noting down the complaints and sending these details to the central office at Karachi,” noted the PTA’s Telecom Quarterly Review 2007 issued recently.

IMEI system defined |
| |
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority in September 2006 launched the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) system to block snatched or stolen mobile in collaboration with the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) and cell phone service providers to discourage growing cell phone snatchings and thefts. The IMEI is a unique number of every cell phone, which can be reached by dialling *#06#. In case of the cell phone snatching or theft, the PTA-CPLC system enables a consumer to call Police Madadgar 15 to lodge complaint with their IMEI number. The system also offers online complaint registration to cell phone theft victims accessing www.cplc.org.pk/imei_form.php . After such complaint registration, the CPLC forwards it to the PTA, which contacts the mobile phone companies for making respective mobile phone sets disabled. The PTA also shares the information about blocked sets with the CPLC. |

Books The art of reading |
| |
In order to derive maximum pleasure from reading, one should follow the right course of reading. Different people have their own likes and dislikes. By Suhail Nasir , Books to read: Tn the art of reading books, the first thing, which requires attention, is the choice of books. According to Ruskin, books are of two kinds:
1. Books for the hour
2. Books for all times.
1. Ruskin, a well-known English writer says, "A book for the hour is simply the useful talk of some person when you cannot otherwise converse with, printed for you." Accounts of traveling, interesting discussions on current questions and light fiction can be called the books for the hour. These books are good for reading; but we should not.
2.True books or books for all times are the books, which are the trove of the highest thoughts of the world's great thinkers.

Letter to the Editor “The joy of reading” |
| |
Sarwat Ghaffar says “People who do not read newspapers, periodicals, books and novels remain unable to harness good writing skills. Others’ writing should be read with concentration to increase ones own knowledge base for creative writing.
The role of mass communication in this postmodern epoch has become highly significant and efficient. Electronic media offer the opportunity to disseminate knowledge at a rapid rate to a large number of people around the world.”

National Monument: Many like it, few don’t |
| |
The National Monument, built here at a cost of Rs 509 million at Shakarparain Hills is not only attracting a lot of visitors but also inviting criticism soon after its inauguration on March 24 by the President, General Pervez Musharraf. The monument constructed on top of the once lush green Shakraparain Hills, is a masterpiece of civil engineering and architecture and was completed in 30-months time. But quite a few citizens are of the view that this project is a ‘sheer wastage of taxpayer’s money’.
